How Photosynthesis Turns Light into Food
A leaf looks still, but inside it a busy energy change is taking place. Plants use light, water, and carbon dioxide to build sugar, giving themselves food and releasing oxygen along the way.
A leaf is a tiny food factory
Plants cannot walk to a kitchen or hunt for a meal, so they make their own food. Most of this work happens in leaves, where cells contain chloroplasts. Inside those chloroplasts is chlorophyll, the green pigment that absorbs useful parts of sunlight.
The plant also gathers raw materials. Roots take in water from the soil, and small openings in the leaves let carbon dioxide enter from the air.
