What Is a Cathedral? A Chair, a Building and a Construction Problem

A cathedral is defined not by size, beauty or age but by containing one piece of furniture: the cathedra, the bishop's chair, which makes the building the administrative seat of a diocese. A small parish church can be a cathedral and an enormous abbey is not. What makes the great medieval examples interesting is that a religious requirement for height and light ran directly into a structural problem, and the solutions to that problem are the reason the buildings look the way they do.
The problem of the roof
Early large churches were roofed in timber and burned regularly, so builders wanted stone vaults, and stone vaults push outward as well as down. A Romanesque building solved this with mass: thick walls, small windows, semicircular arches and heavy piers, producing the dark, solid interiors of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Gothic solution, developed in the Ile-de-France from the 1140s, was to concentrate the forces into a skeleton and then support the skeleton, which allowed the walls between to become glass. Three inventions do the work together:
- •The pointed arch, which directs thrust more steeply downward than a semicircular one and, crucially, can span different widths at the same height, which a semicircular arch cannot
- •The ribbed vault, which channels the load of the ceiling into ribs meeting at defined points rather than spreading it across the whole surface
- •The flying buttress, an arm of masonry reaching from an external pier to the point where the vault pushes outward, catching the thrust and carrying it down outside the building
- •Pinnacles on top of the buttress piers, which look decorative and add weight exactly where it is needed to redirect the combined force safely downward
- •The result is that the wall carries almost nothing, which is why the windows could grow until the structure is closer to a stone cage filled with glass
Why light mattered so much
The drive to enlarge the windows was theological before it was aesthetic. Abbot Suger, rebuilding the choir of Saint-Denis near Paris from 1140 in what is usually called the first Gothic building, wrote explicitly about light as a means of lifting the mind from the material toward the immaterial, drawing on a tradition identifying God with light. The stained glass that filled the resulting openings was not primarily decorative either: in a population that could not read, the windows and the carved portals were instruction, laying out the biblical narrative, the lives of saints and the hierarchy of the world in a form a visitor could be walked through. The glass at Chartres, most of it surviving from the early thirteenth century, is the best remaining example of the complete scheme, and the blue used there has never been exactly reproduced.
How they were built
The practical arrangements are as interesting as the architecture. A large cathedral took between fifty and two hundred years, so almost nobody involved saw it finished, and styles changed during construction, which is why many have towers or facades in a different manner from their naves. The workforce was organised around a master mason who was designer, engineer and site manager, working from templates and geometric rules rather than from dimensioned drawings, and the knowledge was transmitted through apprenticeship and lodge rather than in writing. The stone was quarried, transported by water where possible and lifted by treadwheel crane. Financing came from bishops, kings, guilds, pilgrim offerings and the sale of indulgences, and several projects stopped for decades when money ran out. Failures were common: the choir vault at Beauvais, built higher than anything before it at forty-eight metres, collapsed in 1284, and the building was never completed.
Reading the plan
The layout is consistent enough that one building explains most others. The plan is usually a cross, with the long nave running west to east, the transepts crossing it, and the choir and sanctuary at the east end where the altar stands, oriented toward the sunrise and toward Jerusalem. The west front faces the town and carries the main portals and their sculpture. An ambulatory runs around behind the altar with radiating chapels off it, an arrangement developed specifically to let pilgrims circulate past a shrine without interrupting services. The nave elevation typically has three levels: the arcade of large arches at ground level, a triforium passage above, and the clerestory windows at the top, and the proportion between them is the clearest indicator of date, since the clerestory grows steadily taller across the Gothic period as the structure improved. A labyrinth set into the floor, as at Chartres, was walked as a substitute pilgrimage.
Afterwards
The buildings have had a long second life. Many were damaged or stripped during the Reformation and the French Revolution, and most were heavily restored in the nineteenth century by architects including Viollet-le-Duc, whose work at Notre-Dame added the spire that burned in 2019 and whose approach, restoring a building to a complete state it may never have had, is now regarded as invention as much as conservation. They remain among the largest structures in many European towns, they continue to function as working churches, and they are visited overwhelmingly by people who are not there to worship, which creates a permanent tension over ticketing, tourism and purpose. Maintenance is continuous and enormously expensive, since limestone erodes, iron cramps rust and expand, and a building designed to be repaired by a permanent workshop now depends on fundraising. The Notre-Dame fire and the five-year reconstruction that followed demonstrated both the fragility and the fact that the medieval techniques, including hand-hewn oak framing, are still recoverable when someone pays for them.
