Why Burn a Mark Into an Animal? Ownership Written Where It Cannot Be Removed

Marking livestock permanently solves the problem of proving ownership of something that wanders and looks like every other one. The systems built around that mark are more elaborate than the mark itself.
The problem it solves
Livestock move, mix with other herds and are difficult to tell apart, which makes ownership hard to prove and theft easy. A permanent visible mark that cannot be transferred or removed without obvious damage solves that directly, which is why the practice is ancient and appears wherever animals are grazed on open land rather than kept enclosed. Branding with a heated iron is the oldest method and is depicted in Egyptian tomb painting. The mark identifies the owner rather than the animal, so it answers who this belongs to rather than which animal this is, and that distinction matters for what the system can and cannot do.
How the systems work
Effective branding requires administration around the mark:
- •A register recording which mark belongs to whom, maintained by a public authority
- •Rules preventing two owners holding marks that could be confused or altered into each other
- •A specified position on the animal, since the same mark in a different place is a different registration
- •Inspection at sale and at slaughter, checking the mark against the register

Reading a brand
Marks developed into a system with its own grammar and vocabulary. Symbols combine letters, numbers and shapes, and are read in a defined order, generally from left to right, from top to bottom and from outside to inside. Modifiers change the meaning, so a letter lying on its side, resting on a curved line, tilted or with added strokes each produce a distinct registered mark from the same letter, with names describing each modification. That system allows an enormous number of distinct marks from a small set of elements while keeping each readable at a distance on a moving animal. Learning to read them was a practical skill, and published books of registered marks are a substantial genre in regions where the practice mattered.
Marking everything else
The same problem produces the same solution across a great many domains. Sheep are marked with ear notches, coloured fleece paint and ear tags rather than brands, since wool complicates burning. Bees are not marked individually and hives are registered instead. Timber is marked at the end of each log with a stamped hammer bearing the owner's mark, which is why forestry hammers are controlled items. Silver, tin and pewter carry maker's marks. Bricks were stamped with the works that made them. Books carry ownership inscriptions and plates. In every case the requirement is the same, being a mark that travels with the object, is difficult to forge or remove, and can be checked against a register somebody maintains.
What replaced and supplements it
Modern livestock identification has additional requirements branding cannot meet. Disease control and food safety demand tracing an individual animal from birth to slaughter, which requires identifying the animal rather than the owner, so numbered ear tags became compulsory across many jurisdictions. Electronic tags readable by machine allow automatic recording at every movement. Databases hold the resulting records. Branding persists alongside those, because a tag can be removed or lost and a brand cannot, and because on open range a mark readable at distance remains useful. Welfare concerns about hot branding have driven freeze branding, which damages pigment cells so the hair regrows white, and legislation restricting the practice in several countries.
