What Is Drypoint? Scratching a Plate and Printing the Burr

Scratching directly into a metal plate with a sharp point throws up a ridge of displaced metal alongside the line. That ridge holds ink and prints as a soft velvety black, and it wears away within a small number of impressions.
How it works
The artist draws directly onto a plate with a hard sharp tool, ploughing a furrow into the metal rather than cutting a clean groove, and the displaced metal piles up along one or both sides of the line as a raised ridge called the burr. Ink applied to the plate fills both the furrow and catches in the burr, and wiping removes the surface ink while leaving both charged. Printing under pressure transfers both, and the burr contributes a soft spreading blackness alongside the crisper line from the furrow itself. That soft quality is the entire point of the technique and distinguishes it from engraving, where the metal is cut away cleanly and removed, producing a sharp line with no burr at all.
What it gives and costs
The technique trades quality against quantity in a way no other printmaking method does:

Where it sits among the methods
Intaglio printing covers several techniques that all print from lines below the plate surface, and distinguishing them is a basic skill in looking at prints. Engraving cuts a clean V-shaped groove with a pushed tool, giving a sharp line that swells and tapers with the depth of the cut. Etching protects the plate with a resistant coating, draws through it with a needle and lets acid bite the exposed metal, which produces a line of even width and permits a freer drawing motion. Drypoint scratches directly and keeps the burr. Mezzotint roughens the whole plate and then smooths areas back to produce tone rather than line. Aquatint produces tone by biting around particles of resin. Artists combine them freely on one plate, and identifying which marks came from which method is how a print is read technically.
Telling impressions apart
Because the plate changes as it is printed, impressions from a single drypoint plate differ visibly, which matters to anyone looking at prints. Early impressions show rich dark lines with the characteristic soft spread, and later ones show progressively thinner and drier lines as the burr flattens, until eventually only the incised furrow prints and the result resembles a weak engraving. Cataloguers record these differences as states where the artist made deliberate changes and as impression quality where the difference is wear. Auction descriptions distinguish them carefully, and the price difference between an early and a late impression of the same image can be enormous. Later reprints from surviving plates, sometimes taken long after an artist's death, are generally poor and are catalogued separately, which is a category of print that misleads inexperienced buyers regularly.
Who used it
The technique appears from the fifteenth century and its use has been shaped by the wear problem throughout. Early practitioners used it for a small number of prints, and one anonymous fifteenth-century artist is known largely through drypoints surviving in single impressions. Rembrandt used it extensively, frequently combined with etching, and exploited the burr deliberately for atmospheric darkness, with the difference between early and late impressions of his plates being so pronounced that they are catalogued as distinct states. Later printmakers used it for its directness and for the quality of the line. Modern practice has the same constraint, and artists either accept a small edition, accept that later impressions differ, or steel face the plate and lose some of what made the technique worth using.
