Breaking a vague aim into a definite target for a session supplies the clear goal, since working on something in general does not organise attention while finishing a specific piece of it does. Building in feedback means finding a way to see progress within minutes rather than at the end, which is easy in some work and requires deliberate construction in others. Adjusting difficulty means adding constraints when a task is too easy and reducing scope when it is overwhelming, rather than persisting at a level that produces boredom or anxiety. Protecting the entry period matters most, since interruptions do not merely cost the interrupted minutes but the several minutes required to get back, which is the strongest argument for consolidating work into long uninterrupted blocks rather than distributing it across a fragmented day.
The objections
The concept has been criticised on several grounds worth taking seriously. Measurement is the main one, since the state is defined by self-report and the instruments used to capture it ask people to recall an experience characterised partly by not attending to itself, which is an awkward position.
