When Did a Sharp Stone Become a Weapon? When Somebody Tied It to a Stick

Fixing a stone point or edge to a handle multiplies the force available and changes what a tool can do. Working out when that started is one of the harder questions in archaeology.
Why a handle changes everything
A stone held in the hand delivers force from the wrist and arm over a short distance, and the hand must grip an object that is sharp. A handle removes both limits at once. It lengthens the lever, so the same muscular effort delivers far more energy at the working edge, which is what makes an axe effective against timber. It removes the hand from the edge, allowing a much sharper and more fragile point to be used. It permits a weapon to be thrown or thrust from a distance, which changes hunting entirely. And it allows the working piece to be replaced when it breaks while keeping the handle.
How the joint was made
Fixing stone to wood reliably is not trivial and several methods were used:
- •A split in the wood with the stone wedged into it and bound
- •A socket cut or burnt into the end of a shaft
- •Adhesive made from birch tar, pitch or plant gum with filler
- •Binding with sinew, gut or plant fibre, applied wet to shrink tight
- •A separate sleeve of antler or bone between stone and wood
- •Frequently several of those combined on the same tool
How archaeologists tell
Handles are wood and adhesive and rarely survive, so the evidence is mostly indirect and the reasoning is what makes the field interesting. Residues of adhesive on a stone point indicate mounting, and those residues can be identified chemically and dated. Wear patterns differ between a hand-held tool and a mounted one, since the forces and contact areas differ, and those patterns are established by making replicas and using them. Impact damage at the tip in a particular form indicates a projectile. The shape of the base, thinned or notched for mounting, is suggestive. And rare waterlogged or frozen sites preserve complete examples directly.
What the adhesive required
Birch tar deserves separating out because making it is more demanding than the finished tool suggests. Birch bark heated in the presence of air simply burns, so the tar is produced only by heating it while excluding oxygen, which requires a sealed container or a covered pit and sustained temperatures over several hours. The product is a black sticky substance that is hard when cold and workable when warmed, and it was frequently mixed with ochre or beeswax to adjust how brittle it was. Producing it is therefore evidence of planning, of control over fire and of a multi stage process with no useful intermediate product.
How far back it goes
The date has been pushed back repeatedly and the current picture is older than the textbooks of a generation ago. Adhesive residues on stone tools from sites in Italy and Germany indicate mounting by roughly two hundred thousand years ago, associated with Neanderthals rather than with modern humans, and the production of birch tar requires controlled heating in the absence of air, which is itself a demanding technical achievement. Wooden spears from Schoningen in Germany, around three hundred thousand years old, are shaped throwing weapons without stone points. The evidence therefore indicates the technology was in place well before modern humans, which was not the expectation.

A handle lengthens the lever, removes the hand from the edge, allows throwing and lets the working piece be replaced, which together change what a stone tool can do. Split shafts, sockets, tar adhesive and wet bindings that shrink tight were used, frequently together. Handles rarely survive, so evidence comes from adhesive residues and wear patterns, and those push the date back to around two hundred thousand years.
