What Is a Hypocaust? Underfloor Heating Two Thousand Years Early

A Roman bath house floor was raised on short brick pillars, and hot gas from a furnace circulated through the space beneath before rising through flues built into the walls. The result was a heated floor and heated walls, delivered by a system that is recognisably the ancestor of modern underfloor heating and that Europe then did without for fifteen centuries.
How it was built
The construction is consistent enough across the empire to describe generically:
- •A lower floor of tile or concrete, on which short pillars called pilae were built, typically of stacked square tiles and usually around half a metre high
- •Large tiles spanning the pillars to carry the upper floor, itself made of concrete and mortar and frequently finished with mosaic
- •A furnace, the praefurnium, outside the room and below floor level, stoked continuously by slaves with wood or charcoal
- •Hot gases and smoke drawn through the underfloor void, heating the tile pillars and the floor above by conduction
- •Hollow box tiles set vertically inside the walls, called tubuli, which drew the gas upward, heating the wall surfaces and providing the draught that made the whole thing work
- •Chimneys or vents at the top of the walls releasing the exhaust, so the combustion products never entered the room itself
- •Graduated rooms in a bath complex, with the hottest nearest the furnace and progressively cooler rooms further away, achieved by distance rather than by any control mechanism
Why the design is clever
Several features address problems that are not obvious until the system is examined. The heat is delivered by a large warm surface at a low temperature rather than by a small very hot one, which produces even comfortable radiant heating and avoids the scorching and smoke of an open fire, and is the same argument made for underfloor heating today. The wall flues do double duty, extracting heat from gas that would otherwise leave up a chimney and simultaneously creating the upward draught that pulls fresh air through the furnace, so the heating surface and the ventilation system are the same thing. The thermal mass of the concrete floor and tile pillars stores heat, so a bath house heated overnight stays warm through the day, and the system is slow to respond in both directions, which suits a building in continuous use and would be useless for a room heated occasionally. Combustion products stay entirely outside the occupied space, which is a genuine safety achievement.
Who had them
Hypocausts were expensive in fuel and labour and were correspondingly restricted. Public baths were the main application and were built in enormous numbers across the empire, from the imperial complexes in Rome holding thousands of bathers to modest provincial establishments, and the fuel consumption of a large bath house was considerable enough to shape local forestry. Wealthy private villas installed them, generally in a few rooms rather than throughout. Military bath houses appear at forts along the frontiers, including in northern Britain, where the surviving examples at Chesters and elsewhere are among the best preserved anywhere and demonstrate that soldiers on a cold frontier had heated bathing while later inhabitants of the same landscape did not. The system was not confined to Rome: comparable underfloor heating developed independently in Korea as the ondol, which uses the same principle of routing furnace gas beneath a floor and which remains in continuous use in modified form to this day, making it arguably the longest-lived heating technology anywhere.
Why it vanished
The disappearance of hypocausts in western Europe is a clear case of a technology lost with the institutions that supported it rather than being superseded by something better. The system requires a building programme capable of large-scale construction in concrete and tile, a supply of fuel organised and transported at scale, and above all a continuous supply of labour to stoke a furnace day and night, all of which depended on the economic and social arrangements of the empire. When those ended, the technology had no context to survive in, and heating reverted to open hearths and later to fireplaces with chimneys, which are far less efficient and far more tolerant of intermittent use by a household with no staff. Underfloor heating returned to Europe only in the twentieth century, using hot water pipes rather than flue gas, and the modern arguments for it are precisely the ones the Roman system already exploited: large low-temperature radiant surfaces, thermal mass and comfort without draughts.
