What Is a Logical Fallacy? An Argument That Fails on Its Own Terms

A fallacy is a flaw in the structure of an argument, meaning the conclusion does not follow from the premises even if every premise happens to be true. That is a narrower and more useful idea than it sounds, because it separates two questions that are constantly confused: whether a claim is correct, and whether the reasoning offered for it actually supports it.
Valid, sound and neither
Formal logic distinguishes validity from truth in a way ordinary speech does not. An argument is valid if the conclusion must follow whenever the premises are true, which says nothing about whether the premises are true. It is sound if it is valid and the premises are also true. A perfectly valid argument can therefore have a false conclusion if a premise is false, and an invalid argument can happen to reach a true conclusion by accident. The practical consequence is the most useful single point about fallacies: identifying one shows only that a particular argument fails, not that its conclusion is false. Treating a spotted fallacy as a refutation of the claim is itself a recognised error, sometimes called the fallacy fallacy, and it is common in online argument, where naming a fallacy is frequently used as a way of ending a discussion rather than continuing it.
Formal and informal
Formal fallacies are defects in structure that can be identified without knowing what the argument is about. Affirming the consequent is the standard example: from the claim that if it rained the ground is wet, together with the observation that the ground is wet, it does not follow that it rained, since a burst pipe would do. Denying the antecedent is its mirror. These are mechanical errors and are relatively easy to spot once the form is recognised. Informal fallacies are failures of content and context rather than of form, which makes them far more common and far harder to adjudicate, because most of them describe moves that are sometimes legitimate. Attacking a person's character is irrelevant when assessing their argument and entirely relevant when assessing their testimony. An appeal to authority is weak when the authority is outside their field and reasonable when they are the relevant expert and the question is empirical. That is why lists of informal fallacies are better treated as prompts to look harder than as rules that settle anything.
The ones worth recognising
A small number recur often enough to be worth naming precisely:
- •The straw man, which restates an opponent's position in a weaker form and refutes that instead, and whose opposite, the steel man, is the practice of arguing against the strongest version

- •Begging the question, which assumes in a premise what the argument is supposed to establish, and which in its ordinary modern use has come to mean something else entirely
- •Equivocation, where a key word shifts meaning between premises, which is the engine of a great many apparent paradoxes
- •The slippery slope, which is a fallacy only when the chain of consequences is asserted rather than argued, since some slopes are genuinely slippery
- •Appeal to nature, treating natural as equivalent to good, and appeal to tradition, treating long-established as equivalent to correct
- •Survivorship bias and the closely related base rate neglect, which are statistical errors that behave like fallacies in argument
Why they persist
Fallacies survive because they are frequently persuasive, and psychology explains why better than logic does. Motivated reasoning means people scrutinise arguments for conclusions they dislike far more carefully than arguments for conclusions they already hold, so a weak argument for a congenial position passes unchallenged. Cognitive shortcuts that work well in ordinary life, including trusting confident speakers and reasoning from vivid examples, misfire in argument. Social incentives reward winning rather than being right, particularly in public settings, and several fallacies are effective precisely because an audience cannot check them in real time. The practical response is not memorising a list but adopting habits: stating the opposing position in a form its holder would accept before responding to it, separating the question of whether a claim is true from whether a given argument supports it, and asking what evidence would change your own mind, which is a question that reveals quickly whether a position is being held for reasons or for other purposes.
