Musical taste is affected, with unfamiliar music generally rated lower and liking increasing over repeated hearings, which has implications for how radio programming works. Political name recognition operates similarly and is why candidates spend on visibility. Preference for one's own mirrored image over a photograph is attributed to it, since the mirror view is the familiar one. Familiarity with faces increases attractiveness ratings. And preferences for the ordinary and typical over the unusual in design, in faces and in language are consistent with the same mechanism.

A specific consequence of the effect has attracted attention because of what it does to information. Repeated exposure to a claim increases the sense that it is true, which is the illusory truth effect and appears to operate by the same fluency mechanism, since a familiar statement is processed more easily and that ease is misread as plausibility. That has obvious implications for how misinformation spreads, since correcting a claim requires repeating it and repetition increases familiarity, which is why guidance on correction now advises leading with the accurate statement rather than with the falsehood being corrected. And the large early literature was produced under the statistical practices of its period, so while the core finding has survived replication, the specific magnitudes and moderators reported in older work should be treated with the caution appropriate to that era.
