A metronome produces a steady audible pulse at a chosen rate, which sounds like an unambiguously useful thing for a musician to have. Its introduction changed how music was written and taught, and whether practising with one helps or harms is genuinely disputed.
How it works and where it came from
The mechanical version uses a pendulum with an adjustable weight above the pivot as well as below it, which allows a short pendulum to swing slowly, since the upper weight counteracts gravity's restoring force. That double-weighted design is what makes a portable device possible, since a simple pendulum beating at sixty per minute would need to be about a metre long. An escapement mechanism, driven by a wound spring, gives the pendulum a small push each swing to replace lost energy and produces the audible click. Johann Maelzel patented the design in 1815 after a dispute with Dietrich Winkel, who had built the essential mechanism first, and Maelzel's name became attached to the tempo markings musicians still use. Electronic and software versions produce the same pulse without the mechanism and add features including subdivision, accent patterns and irregular metres, which the mechanical device cannot do.

Having a reproducible tempo reference altered several things at once:

The argument about practising with one
Musicians and teachers disagree about the device and both positions have substance. The case for is that it provides an external reference exposing unsteadiness that a player cannot hear in themselves, that difficult passages can be built up systematically by increasing tempo in small increments, and that ensemble playing requires a shared sense of pulse that practising alone does not develop. The case against is that a click supplies the timekeeping rather than developing it, so a player may become dependent and perform worse without it, that rigid adherence flattens the expressive timing that makes music sound alive, and that the device encourages practising fast passages at speed before they are secure. Research on motor learning generally supports external feedback during acquisition and its gradual removal afterwards, which suggests the resolution is to use it deliberately and temporarily rather than constantly. Practising with the click on beats two and four, or on every other bar, is a common intermediate step.
What steady time is worth
The deeper question is whether perfectly even tempo is even desirable, and the evidence suggests it is not. Analyses of expressive performance find systematic timing deviations that listeners judge as musical rather than as errors, with phrase endings slowing and important notes lengthened, and performances quantised to a perfect grid are consistently rated as mechanical. In popular music, the small timing displacements between players are a substantial part of what produces groove, and studies have found that listeners prefer recordings with those microtiming variations to perfectly aligned versions in several genres. Producers have responded by deliberately reintroducing timing variation into programmed music. At the same time, some styles genuinely want machine precision and the aesthetic of exact time is a real one rather than a failure. The conclusion is that steadiness is a skill worth having and evenness is a choice rather than a goal, which is exactly what makes the device useful in practice and misleading as a standard.
