Why Does the Same Drum Sound Different? What You Hit It With

A percussion instrument produces a different sound depending entirely on the hardness, weight and size of what strikes it, which is why players carry a bag of them. The physics behind that choice is straightforward.

What the striker decides

Striking a surface excites many vibration patterns at once, and which of them receive energy depends on how long the contact lasts. A hard striker contacts briefly and delivers a sharp impulse, which puts energy into high frequencies and produces a bright attacking sound with the fundamental note less prominent. A soft striker contacts for longer, which cannot excite the fastest vibrations and therefore emphasises the lower ones, producing a rounder warmer sound with a clearer pitch. Weight determines how much energy is delivered and how the instrument responds afterwards, since a heavy head sustains contact and damps the surface. Head size determines how much of the surface is engaged. Those three together cover essentially every decision a player makes.

The range available

Players carry many because each instrument and passage wants something different:

  • Hard rubber, plastic or wood, for brightness and articulation
  • Yarn-wrapped heads over a core, in grades from soft to hard, standard on tuned percussion
  • Felt heads for timpani, again in several hardnesses
  • Cord wrapping, harder than yarn and used on particular instruments
  • Brushes and rods, which spread contact across many points
  • Bare hands, which deliver a completely different contact again

Matching to the instrument

The choice is constrained by what the instrument is made of as well as by the sound wanted. Bars of wood are damaged by hard strikers and are played with yarn or rubber, while bars of metal tolerate harder ones and need them to speak clearly at the top of the range. Timpani are struck with felt and would be damaged and would sound wrong with anything harder, except where a composer asks for it deliberately. Cymbals respond completely differently to a stick and to a soft mallet, producing a crash or a swelling roll from the same instrument. Playing position matters alongside the striker, since striking near the edge, at the centre or at a node produces different results from the same stroke.

Where the sound actually comes from

Several tuned percussion instruments produce far more sound from something other than the bar being struck, which explains their appearance. Beneath each bar of a marimba or a vibraphone hangs a tube cut to a length that resonates at the bar's pitch, which amplifies it enormously and lengthens the decay, and covering the tube kills most of the sound, which demonstrates how much of it the tube supplies. The bars themselves are shaped with an arch cut from the underside, which lowers particular overtones into harmonic relationships with the fundamental and is what makes a tuned bar sound like a note rather than a clang. A vibraphone adds motor-driven discs rotating at the top of each tube, which interrupt the resonance periodically and produce its characteristic pulsing.

What a player is actually choosing

The decision involves the room and the ensemble as much as the instrument. A hall with long reverberation blurs a bright attack into mush, which pushes towards softer choices, while a dry room needs the articulation a harder one supplies. Playing with a large ensemble requires cutting through, which favours brightness, while an exposed solo passage can afford warmth. Dynamic level interacts, since a soft mallet played hard behaves differently from a hard mallet played softly and the two are not interchangeable. Composers sometimes specify, sometimes indicate a general character and frequently leave it entirely to the player, which makes the choice a substantial part of how a percussion part is interpreted rather than a technical detail.
