What Is the Crosspiece on a Sword For? Not Mainly for Catching Blades

The bar across a sword hilt is usually explained as a guard against an opponent's blade, and its more important job is stopping the user's own hand sliding onto the edge.
What it actually does
The crosspiece serves several purposes and the one that matters most in ordinary use is the least dramatic. A thrust that meets resistance drives the hand forward along the grip, and without a stop the hand slides onto the blade, which on a sharp weapon is a serious self-inflicted injury. The bar prevents that. It also gives a surface to push against when withdrawing a blade, provides a place to hook or trap an opponent's weapon, and lets the sword be used in reverse with the crosspiece as a hammer or a hook, which medieval fighting manuals describe explicitly.
Why it is not primarily a blade guard
The parry-catching explanation does not survive examination of the objects:

How the shape changed
The development follows changes in armour and in how swords were used. Early medieval weapons carry a simple straight bar. As fighting in armour developed techniques for gripping the blade itself, crosspieces lengthened and curved forward to hook an opponent's weapon or limb. Rings and side bars were added from the fifteenth century to protect a finger hooked over the cross for better control. Those additions multiplied into the enclosing baskets and cups of sixteenth and seventeenth century civilian weapons, at which point the hand was genuinely protected and the original bar had become one element in a complicated structure.
How the assembly is held together
Understanding how the parts join explains both how such weapons are repaired and how modern reproductions fail. The blade continues past the guard as a narrow extension running through the crosspiece, the grip and the pommel, and the end of that extension is hammered over the pommel to lock everything in compression. Nothing is glued and nothing threads together in the older weapons. That means the assembly can be taken apart by drilling out the peened end, which is how museum pieces are examined and conserved, and it means a grip can be replaced without touching the blade. A reproduction with a thin extension or a threaded nut fails at exactly that joint.
What the whole hilt does
The crosspiece is one part of an assembly and the other components matter as much. The grip is shaped and wrapped to give a secure hold with a wet or gloved hand, and its cross section is frequently oval so that the user knows the blade's orientation without looking. The pommel at the end is a counterweight balancing the blade, which moves the balance point closer to the hand and makes the weapon feel far lighter and quicker than its actual mass suggests, and it also physically secures the assembly, since the blade's extension passes through everything and is riveted over it.
