What Is a Schema? The Structure That Makes New Information Stick

A schema is an organised body of knowledge about a kind of thing or situation, and it determines what a person notices, understands and remembers. New information that fits an existing structure is retained easily, and information with nothing to attach to is mostly lost.
What schemas do
Frederic Bartlett demonstrated in the 1930s that memory is reconstructive rather than reproductive, having British participants recall an unfamiliar Native American folk tale repeatedly and finding that their versions became shorter, more conventional and progressively reshaped towards the expectations of their own culture, with unfamiliar elements dropped or replaced. That is the core finding and it has held up: memory is not storage and retrieval of a record but reconstruction from fragments guided by expectation. Schemas do that guiding. They fill gaps with default assumptions, which is why people confidently remember details of a scene that were never present but belong in a scene of that type. They direct attention towards what is relevant and away from what is not. They permit rapid comprehension, since a situation recognised as an instance of a familiar type needs far less processing. And they make prediction possible, which is what allows anyone to function in a new restaurant or a new office.
The consequences for learning
The practical implications are substantial and several are counterintuitive:

How they mislead
The same mechanism that makes comprehension possible produces predictable distortions. False memories arise when a schema supplies a plausible detail, which is documented in studies where participants confidently recall items belonging to a scene type that were never presented. Stereotypes function as schemas about groups of people, so information consistent with one is noticed and remembered while inconsistent information is discounted or treated as exceptional, which is a large part of why stereotypes persist against evidence. Eyewitness testimony is affected, since a witness reconstructs an event partly from expectations about what happens in such events, and post-event information is incorporated without the witness being able to distinguish its source. Expert schemas produce their own errors, since a radiologist expecting one condition may fail to notice another, which is documented as satisfaction of search. In each case the distortion is not carelessness but the normal operation of a system designed to make sense of incomplete input.
Changing one
Schemas are updated by two processes distinguished in the developmental literature. Assimilation absorbs new information into the existing structure, which is efficient and which is why contradictory evidence frequently fails to change anything, since it is reinterpreted to fit. Accommodation alters the structure itself, which is effortful and generally requires that the existing schema fail conspicuously and repeatedly. That asymmetry explains why misconceptions survive instruction, and the teaching techniques that work against them are correspondingly specific: eliciting the existing belief explicitly so it can be examined, presenting a situation where it produces a clearly wrong prediction, and supplying a replacement rather than only a refutation, since a demolished schema leaves a gap that the old one refills. Conceptual change teaching is built on exactly that sequence, and its success rate indicates how firmly these structures hold rather than how badly it is done.
