A small wooden dowel wedged inside a violin, held only by friction, transforms how the instrument sounds. Moving it by half a millimetre is audible.
What it does mechanically
The post is a short spruce cylinder standing between the front and back plates of the instrument, positioned just behind the foot of the bridge on the treble side, held in place only by the tension it applies. It does two jobs at once. Moving it closer to the bridge stiffens the response and brightens the sound, moving it away softens and darkens it, and shifting it sideways or lengthwise changes the balance between strings. The adjustment is used to correct an instrument that is harsh, or dull, or uneven between strings, and a good repairer can change the character of an instrument considerably without touching anything else.
The names it is given
Several languages call the component the soul of the instrument, in French, Italian and Russian among others, and the naming is not merely poetic. It reflects both how decisively the part governs the sound and the fact that it is invisible, unattached and easily lost, since slackening the strings of an instrument with a poorly fitted one drops it to the bottom of the body. Players are routinely warned never to remove all four strings at once for that reason. Recovering a fallen one requires the same hooked tool and the same blind work as fitting it, and an instrument left without one under string tension can crack across the front.
How it is fitted
The fitting is a specialised job precisely because nothing holds the post except friction. Its ends must be cut to match the curved and sloping inner surfaces of the plates exactly, since a post touching on an edge concentrates pressure and can crack the plate, and a loose one falls over as soon as the strings are slackened. It is inserted and manipulated through one of the sound holes with a long hooked tool, working blind, and a maker checks the fit with a mirror and a light. A post that is too long distorts the instrument and a short one does nothing, and both faults are common in cheap instruments.
