Why Did So Many Cultures Think the Sky Was a Dome? Reading the Obvious

A solid sky arching overhead, with waters above it and lights fixed to its inner surface, appears in the cosmologies of many unconnected societies. The picture follows from what the sky actually looks like.
What the picture holds
The recurring model describes the sky as a solid structure, variously a dome, a tent, a lid or a series of concentric shells, resting on or joined to the edges of a flat earth. Lights are attached to it and move with it, and openings in it admit rain, which explains why water falls from above. Above or beyond it lie further waters, or another realm, or the dwelling of gods. Pillars, mountains or a world tree at the edges or the centre hold it up, and the horizon is where it meets the ground. Variants place several layers one above another, with different beings inhabiting each and the number of layers frequently being three or seven.
Where versions of it appear
The model recurs across traditions with no contact between them:

- •The Hebrew scriptures, with a firmament separating waters above from waters below
- •Egyptian imagery, with the sky as a body arched over the earth or as a cow
- •Norse tradition, with a vault made from the skull of a primordial being
- •Chinese models describing the heavens as a cover over a square earth
- •Numerous traditions across the Americas, Africa, Siberia and Oceania with layered heavens
Why the picture is reasonable
The model deserves more respect than it usually gets, since it accounts for the available evidence economically. The sky genuinely looks like a surface, with no visible depth, and the stars appear to sit on it at equal distance, which is exactly what is observed and which requires a considerable argument to overturn. The stars rotate together as a unit, keeping their arrangement, which is what a rigid structure would do and what independent objects would not. Rain falls from above, so water must be up there. The horizon is a boundary where sky meets earth. Every one of those inferences is sound, and the model is a fair reading of observation rather than a failure of thought, which is the point most often missed when it is described as primitive.
The flat earth misunderstanding
A correction is needed about how long this picture actually lasted among people who studied the question. The claim that medieval Europeans believed the earth was flat is a nineteenth century invention, promoted in popular histories of science that wanted a story about religion obstructing knowledge, and it is not supported by the sources. Educated opinion from Greek antiquity onward held the earth to be a sphere, its circumference had been estimated reasonably well in the third century before the common era, and medieval texts refer to the spherical earth routinely, including in works written for ordinary readers. Objections to Columbus concerned the distance to Asia rather than the shape of the earth, and he underestimated it badly. The vault model belongs to much older cosmologies and to popular imagination rather than to medieval scholarship.
How it was overturned
Displacing the model required specific observations that a dome cannot accommodate. The planets move independently against the stars and reverse direction periodically, which no rigid surface explains and which drove the development of nested rotating spheres as a more elaborate version of the same intuition. Eclipses and the curved shadow the earth casts on the moon indicate a spherical earth, which Greek astronomers established from several independent lines including the shifting of visible stars with latitude and ships disappearing hull first. Later, measured parallax showed that stars lie at enormously different distances, which finally removed the surface entirely. The traces persist in language, since we speak of the sun rising and of the heavens above, which are descriptions from inside the old model.

It is a fair reading of observation, since the sky shows no depth, the stars keep their arrangement as they rotate and rain falls from above.
