How Do You Get Two Oxen to Pull Together? Join Them at the Neck

A shaped wooden beam across the necks or horns of a pair of animals transmits their pull to a plough or a cart. The design looks crude and is the reason oxen dominated for millennia.

What it has to do

Harnessing an animal means taking force from its body without choking it, without rubbing it raw and without letting the load twist it. Cattle have a heavy neck and prominent shoulders, so a beam resting across the neck in front of the shoulders bears against solid structure and transmits force efficiently. Joining two animals to one beam makes them pull as a unit and keeps them at a fixed spacing, which matters enormously for steering, since a pair pulling together turns as one and does not diverge. The beam is shaped to the individual animals, with hollows for each neck, and a badly fitted one injures them within a day.

The forms it takes

Several arrangements exist and the choice depends on the animals:

  • A neck beam with bows passing under each throat, common in Europe
  • A head version lashed to the horns, common in southern Europe and Asia
  • A single-animal version with shafts, for lighter work
  • Multiple pairs joined in series for heavy ploughing
  • A swingletree behind it, letting each animal pull independently
  • Padding at contact points, which determines whether the animal can work

Why it did not suit horses

The same arrangement transferred to horses works badly and that fact shaped agriculture for centuries. A horse has a slender neck and a windpipe close to the surface, so a beam or strap across the throat presses on the airway and the animal chokes itself as it pulls harder, limiting the force it can apply to a fraction of what it could otherwise manage. The collar, which bears on the shoulders and leaves the throat clear, solved that and spread through Europe from around the ninth century onwards, after which horses could replace oxen for ploughing. That change is one of the standard explanations for the increase in agricultural output over the following centuries.

How the animals were trained

A working pair is made rather than found, and the process is long. Animals are matched for size, pace and temperament, since a mismatched pair fights the beam and wears unevenly, and they are worked together from an early age so that each learns the other. Training begins with a light beam and no load, teaching the pair to move together, to stop, and to respond to voice commands, which are used rather than reins because the driver walks alongside with a goad rather than sitting behind. A trained pair works for years and is sold as a pair, since separating them wastes the training and neither works well with a stranger.

Why oxen lasted anyway

The horse did not displace the ox as quickly or as completely as the technical advantage suggests, and the reasons are economic. Oxen are cheaper to buy and far cheaper to keep, since they feed on grass and straw where a working horse needs grain that could have fed people. They are stronger for a given weight and better suited to heavy slow pulling on difficult ground. They can be eaten at the end of their working life, which a horse in most of Europe could not. And the equipment is simple and can be made on the farm. Oxen therefore remained normal on poorer land and in poorer regions long after horses dominated elsewhere.
