How Does One Person Read Thirty Lines at Once? Everything in a Fixed Order

A conductor's copy shows every instrument stacked vertically on each page, arranged in an order that has not changed in a century and a half. Several of those lines do not sound the notes written on them.
How the page is arranged
Every instrument appears on its own line, and all the lines for a given moment are stacked vertically so that anything sounding together is aligned on the page. The order is conventional and fixed, running from the top down through woodwind, then brass, then percussion, then any harp or keyboard, then voices, and finally strings at the bottom. Within each family the instruments run from highest to lowest. That order has been standard since the later nineteenth century, so a conductor opening any score knows where to look without searching. Bar lines run through the whole stack, and a page therefore represents a short span of time across the entire ensemble.
What makes it hard to read
Several features make the page considerably less straightforward than it looks:

- •Several different clefs in use simultaneously
- •Instruments that change between clefs within a movement
- •Percussion notated on lines that do not indicate pitch at all
- •Enormous numbers of rests, since most instruments are silent much of the time
- •Page turns falling in inconvenient places
Why some parts are written wrong on purpose
The transposing convention is the feature that most confuses newcomers and it exists for a practical reason. Instruments such as the clarinet and the horn are built in several sizes, and a player learns one set of fingerings, so the music is written such that the same written note always requires the same fingering regardless of which size of instrument is in use, and the actual pitch differs accordingly. A clarinet in one common size sounds a tone lower than written. A horn in the standard modern size sounds a fifth lower. A conductor must therefore transpose those lines mentally while reading, which is a skill taking years to acquire and is a routine part of conducting training.
Why the parts are printed separately
A player does not read from the full arrangement and the reasons are entirely practical. A player needs only their own line, and reading it from a page containing thirty others would be impossible at speed and would require constant page turns, since a page of full score covers only a few bars. A separate part fits far more music on a page, is printed at a readable size, and can carry bar counts through long rests so a player knows exactly when to come in. Producing those parts from the score is a specialised job, and decisions about where page turns fall matter enough that copyists arrange the music around them. Errors introduced in that copying are a standing problem, which is why rehearsals spend time correcting parts against the score.
What a conductor does with it
The copy is a study document more than a performance one, and what happens to it before rehearsal matters more than what happens during. A conductor works through it in advance, marking entries, dynamics, balance decisions and anything likely to go wrong, and many memorise substantial portions since looking down costs contact with the players. Marks are made in coloured pencil and are personal, and an experienced conductor's copy is dense with them. During rehearsal the score is the reference for resolving disagreements between parts, since printed orchestral parts contain errors and the score is the authority. In performance some conductors use it and some do not, and conducting from memory became a point of display in the twentieth century.
