Getting it wrong

A figure too long stops functioning as a pattern, since the listener cannot hold it and hears it as a melody instead. A figure too complex demands attention it was meant to free. Poor placement of the harmony can make the repetition sound wrong rather than stable, particularly where the figure implies a chord the harmony contradicts.
