Why Would Anyone Write Every Other Line Backwards? To Save the Eye a Journey

Early Greek and several other scripts were written alternately left to right and right to left, with the letters themselves reversed on the return line. The arrangement is named after ploughing.
How the system works
Writing runs in one direction to the end of a line, then continues on the next line in the opposite direction without returning to the margin, exactly as an ox-drawn plough turns at the end of a furrow and works back along the next one, which is what the Greek term describes. The letters themselves are mirrored on the reversed lines, so a letter that faces right on one line faces left on the next, and any asymmetric character flips. That detail is what distinguishes the true system from a text merely alternating direction, and it shows that the writers thought of letters as facing the direction of reading.
Where it was used
The arrangement appears independently in several places:
- •Archaic Greek inscriptions, before left to right became standard
- •Etruscan, Safaitic and several early Anatolian scripts
- •Some early Latin inscriptions
- •Rongorongo, the undeciphered script of Easter Island, in a variant
- •Certain Mayan and Andean recording systems, arguably

Why it made sense at the time
The advantage is that the eye and the hand never travel back across the whole line, which matters more than it sounds when writing is being cut into stone with a chisel rather than written with a pen. A carver working across a block does not have to reposition at the far margin for every line, and a reader following an inscription on a wall or a boundary stone does not have to sweep back. The absence of word spacing in early writing also made the return journey harder than it is now, since there was no visual structure to guide the eye back to the correct line, and continuing straight on removed the problem entirely.
The related question of direction
Why any script runs the direction it does has been argued about and the answers are partly practical. Right to left suits cutting into stone with a chisel held in the left hand and struck with the right, which is the explanation usually offered for the early Semitic scripts. Left to right suits writing with ink in the right hand, since a right-handed writer moving leftward drags the hand through wet ink. Several scripts changed direction when their usual writing surface changed. Chinese and Japanese ran in vertical columns from the right, which suits a brush and a scroll unrolled with one hand. Mongolian runs in vertical columns from the left, which is rarer still.
Why it lost
The system disappeared from Greek by around the fifth century before the common era in favour of consistent left to right, and the reasons are informative about what writing systems optimise for. Mirroring every letter doubles what a writer must know and introduces errors, and it prevents the development of fluent cursive forms, since a letter written in two orientations cannot settle into a single practised movement. Fixed direction also makes copying and correction far easier, and makes it possible to tell at a glance where a text begins. Once writing moved substantially onto papyrus and wax and became a fluent everyday activity rather than a monumental one, the advantage of not returning to the margin stopped being worth the cost.
