Repeating a familiar word until it becomes strange noise is a reliable and slightly unsettling effect, and it reveals how quickly the machinery connecting sound to meaning tires.
What the experience is
Repeat any common word aloud or in your head about thirty times in quick succession and it loses its sense. The sounds remain perfectly clear, and the connection between those sounds and what they refer to goes slack, leaving something that feels like an arbitrary noise and frequently looks misspelled when written down. The effect is temporary, wears off within a minute or so of stopping, and works on almost anybody. It is stronger for words that were meaningful to begin with and barely noticeable for nonsense syllables.
What is thought to cause it

Related experiments found the effect transfers weakly to words with similar meanings, which supports the idea that it is the meaning representation that is fatiguing rather than the sound. The effect also shows up in reaction times for deciding whether a string of letters is a real word.
The neighbouring effects
Several related experiences are produced by the same underlying adaptation and are worth separating. Staring at a word until the spelling looks wrong is closely connected and hits the visual form rather than the meaning. Looking at a face for a long time until it appears distorted is the same fatigue acting on face recognition. Staring at a waterfall and then at rock, which makes the rock appear to drift upwards, is motion adaptation. In every case a system tuned to detect change stops responding to something unchanging, which is generally useful and occasionally produces a strange experience.
What it has been used for
Aside from being a curiosity, the effect has been put to a few practical purposes. It has been applied in stammering therapy, where repeating a feared word until it loses its charge reduces the anxiety attached to it. The same logic appears in exposure treatments for distressing intrusive thoughts, where deliberate repetition drains a phrase of its force. It is also a standard demonstration in teaching about the difference between perceiving a signal and interpreting it, since the split between intact sound and absent meaning is unusually vivid, and it makes the point that understanding a word is an active process rather than an automatic property of the sound.
