What Is Stage Fright? A Threat Response Aimed at an Audience

The racing heart, dry mouth, shaking hands and tunnel vision of performance anxiety are not a malfunction. They are an ordinary threat response, correctly assembled and pointed at a situation that is socially rather than physically dangerous, and the specific symptoms are exactly the ones that make skilled performance harder.
What the body is doing
Perceiving a threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and releases adrenaline and cortisol, which produces a coordinated set of changes intended to prepare for physical action. Heart rate and blood pressure rise, breathing quickens and becomes shallow, blood is redirected from the digestive system and the extremities towards the large muscles, sweating increases, the mouth dries, pupils dilate and attention narrows. Every one of those is useful for running or fighting and actively harmful for playing an instrument, speaking or singing. Cold fingers lose fine control. Shallow breathing undermines breath support for a voice or wind instrument. Tremor destroys bow control and precise articulation. Narrowed attention impairs the peripheral awareness needed to coordinate with other performers. Dry mouth affects diction and reed playing. The response also disrupts working memory, which is why people forget material they knew perfectly an hour earlier.
Why an audience triggers it
The threat being detected is social rather than physical, and the mechanisms are identifiable:
- •Evaluation by others, since human beings are unusually sensitive to social judgement and exclusion, which for most of our history carried real survival consequences
- •Irreversibility, since a live performance cannot be corrected, unlike almost every other skilled activity
- •High stakes relative to preparation, so auditions and examinations produce more anxiety than equally difficult performances with nothing depending on them
- •Self-focused attention, where the performer monitors their own execution rather than the music, which disrupts skills that run better automatically
- •Catastrophic prediction, anticipating a specific disaster and then attending to signs of it, which makes it likelier
- •Anticipation itself, since the anxiety typically peaks before the performance begins and frequently falls once it starts
Why thinking about it makes it worse
Well-learned motor skills run largely without conscious supervision, and directing attention onto the components of an automatic skill degrades it, an effect demonstrated repeatedly in sport and music and usually called choking under pressure. The mechanism is that explicit monitoring interferes with procedural execution, effectively reverting an expert to a novice mode of control, which is slower and less accurate. That explains why the advice to concentrate harder is unhelpful and why experienced performers describe their best performances as absorbed rather than controlled. It also explains why anxiety is worse for skills that are recently learned or incompletely automatic, since those still require conscious attention and have less capacity to spare. The practical implication drawn from this research is that practice should include performing under some pressure, so the skill is rehearsed in conditions resembling the ones it must survive, rather than only in the calm of a practice room.
What helps
The interventions with support are specific. Cognitive behavioural approaches address the catastrophic predictions directly and have the strongest evidence for performance anxiety. Reappraisal, deliberately interpreting the arousal as excitement and readiness rather than as fear, has been shown experimentally to improve performance relative to attempting to calm down, apparently because the physiological state is similar and the interpretation is what differs. Exposure through frequent low-stakes performing reduces the response over time. Attention training directs focus outward onto the music or the message rather than onto the self. Slow breathing lowers arousal physiologically. Simulated practice under observation transfers better than private practice. Beta blockers, which suppress the peripheral symptoms including tremor and racing heart without affecting the mind, are used widely and quietly among professional musicians, particularly for auditions, and their availability is an open secret with an unresolved ethical discussion attached. What does not help is avoidance, which reduces anxiety immediately and strengthens it permanently.
