What Is Stonehenge? Who Built It, How, and What It Might Have Been For

The stones on Salisbury Plain were already ancient when the Romans arrived, and the Romans had no idea who had put them there. Nor did anyone else until the twentieth century, when excavation and, more recently, chemistry traced the builders to the farming communities of Neolithic Britain and the stones to quarries as far away as Wales and, for the great altar stone, Scotland. Stonehenge was not built once. It was built, changed and rebuilt over some fifteen hundred years by people who left no writing, and what it was for is an argument in which the evidence has grown and the certainty has not.

The phases

The monument grew in stages that excavation has dated with radiocarbon:

  • About 3000 BC: a circular ditch and bank 100 metres across, with a ring of 56 pits inside it that held either timber posts or the first bluestones, and cremated human remains, making it one of the largest cemeteries of its time
  • About 2500 BC: the great sarsen stones raised, thirty uprights in a circle capped by a continuous ring of lintels, with five taller trilithons, pairs of uprights with a lintel, in a horseshoe inside; the largest stone weighs about 30 tonnes
  • About 2300 to 2000 BC: the smaller bluestones rearranged into a circle and an inner oval within the sarsens, the arrangement seen today
  • Around 1500 BC: the last additions, and the site slowly abandoned

Where the stones came from

The sarsens, the big grey blocks, are a hard sandstone that lies in slabs on the Marlborough Downs, and in 2020 chemical fingerprinting matched most of them to a single spot at West Woods, 25 kilometres to the north. The bluestones are a puzzle that was solved by geology a century ago and confirmed by excavation since: they are dolerite and rhyolite from the Preseli hills in west Wales, 225 kilometres away, and the outcrops from which some were quarried have been found, with the wedges and stone tools the quarrymen left. Whether they were dragged and rafted the whole way, or carried east by an ice sheet long before and merely collected, has been argued for decades, and the discovery of the quarries and of a dismantled stone circle of the same stones in Wales has settled most archaeologists on human transport. The altar stone, a six-tonne slab lying in the middle, turned out in 2024 to have come from north-east Scotland, at least 700 kilometres away.

How it was built

There was no wheel in Britain, no metal, no draught animals trained to pull, and no writing. What the builders had were ropes of plant fibre, timber, antler picks, stone hammers and, above all, numbers: experiments and the size of the nearby settlement at Durrington Walls suggest workforces of hundreds or thousands, fed by cattle driven from across Britain, whose isotopes show they were raised as far away as Scotland. The sarsens were probably hauled on sledges over timber rails, tipped into pits and levered upright with ropes and timber frames, and the lintels raised on stacked timber platforms or earth ramps and fixed with mortice-and-tenon joints and tongue-and-groove joints, carpentry techniques carried into stone. The stones were shaped with hammerstones, the uprights tapered and the lintels curved to follow the circle, and the whole was levelled on sloping ground to within centimetres.

What it was for

The one thing everybody agrees on is the alignment. The axis of the monument points to sunrise at midsummer in one direction and sunset at midwinter in the other, and the midwinter alignment, framed by the largest trilithon, is the more precise and probably the more important, since the vast feasting deposits at Durrington Walls date to midwinter. Beyond that the interpretations pile up: a temple to the sun or the ancestors; a cemetery and a place for the dead in stone, opposite the timber circles of the living at Durrington; a healing centre, given the number of injured people buried nearby; a monument uniting the peoples of Britain, whose stones from Wales and Scotland were tokens of distant places; and an astronomical observatory, an idea popular in the 1960s that has not survived examination, since the alignments beyond the solstice are no better than chance. Most archaeologists now think it was several of these in turn, over the centuries, and that the certainty of the sun's return at midwinter was the point that never changed.

The people

Ancient DNA has rewritten who they were. The builders of the first phase were farmers descended from migrants who had come from Anatolia by way of the Mediterranean and replaced Britain's hunter-gatherers around 4000 BC. Within a few centuries of the sarsens being raised, those people were themselves replaced, almost entirely, by newcomers from the continent who carried Bell Beaker pottery and steppe ancestry, and the last phases of Stonehenge were their work; ninety percent of the gene pool of Britain turned over in the same centuries the monument was being finished. The Druids, who are still popularly attached to the site, belong to the Iron Age two thousand years later, and the antiquaries of the eighteenth century who connected them to it were guessing.

The takeaway

Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age monument on Salisbury Plain, begun as a ditched enclosure and cemetery around 3000 BC, given its ring of thirty-tonne sarsen stones from 25 kilometres away around 2500 BC, and rearranged with bluestones hauled from west Wales and an altar stone from Scotland over the following centuries, all without wheels, metal or writing. It is aligned on the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, and was most likely a place of the dead, of gathering and of the sun's return, built by farmers whose descendants were replaced by newcomers before it was finished.
