What Is the Zodiac? A Band of Sky That Stopped Matching Its Own Labels

The zodiac is the band of sky through which the sun appears to travel over a year, divided into twelve parts by Babylonian astronomers for arithmetic convenience. The division was a calculating tool, the animal names came from the constellations that happened to sit there, and the two have since drifted apart.
Where the twelve came from
The sun's apparent annual path against the background stars is called the ecliptic, and the planets and moon stay close to it, which makes the band around it the region where all the interesting motion happens. Babylonian astronomers tracked that motion carefully from at least the second millennium before the common era and, by around the fifth century, had divided the band into twelve equal segments of thirty degrees each. Twelve was chosen for arithmetic convenience, matching the approximate number of lunar months in a year and dividing the circle neatly, and the equal division was a deliberate simplification that made position calculation tractable in a sexagesimal number system. Crucially, the constellations along that band are not equal in size and never were, so the twelve signs and the twelve constellations were already different things at the moment of division, with Scorpius occupying a small stretch and Virgo a large one. The scheme passed to Greek astronomy, was systematised in the Hellenistic period, and travelled from there through the Islamic world into medieval Europe.
Signs are not constellations
Several distinctions get collapsed in popular usage and each is worth keeping separate:
- •The signs are twelve equal thirty-degree divisions, while the constellations are irregular areas of sky of very different sizes
- •The signs are measured from the spring equinox, so the first begins wherever the sun sits at that moment, which is a moving reference point
- •Precession, the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, shifts that reference by about one degree every seventy-two years, so the signs have slid roughly a full sign away from the constellations they were named for since the system was fixed
- •A person described as one sign is therefore generally born when the sun is in front of the previous constellation
- •Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, crosses the ecliptic and the sun passes through it for about two and a half weeks each year, which is why the periodic news story about a thirteenth sign is astronomically correct and astrologically irrelevant
- •Sidereal systems, including Indian astrology, use the constellations rather than the equinox and therefore give different results from the Western tropical system for the same birth
What it was originally for
The primary use was calendrical and agricultural. Knowing which part of the zodiac the sun occupied told you the time of year, and the heliacal rising of particular stars, meaning their first appearance in the dawn sky after a period of invisibility, marked seasonal events with useful precision, most famously the rising of Sirius announcing the Nile flood. The band also provided a coordinate system, since positions of the moon and planets were recorded and predicted in terms of degrees within signs, and Babylonian astronomers achieved genuinely impressive predictive accuracy for eclipses and planetary positions using arithmetic methods rather than geometric models. Divination was intertwined with this from early on and was practised on behalf of the state rather than individuals, concerning the king, the harvest and warfare, and the horoscope for a private individual appears later. The separation of astronomy from astrology is a modern distinction that would have made little sense to the practitioners, who were doing one activity with both predictive and interpretive aspects.
The other zodiacs
Twelve-fold division of the sky is not universal and other systems organise the same region differently. The Chinese zodiac is a twelve-year cycle of animals attached to years rather than to positions of the sun, and it operates alongside a separate Chinese astronomical tradition that divides the sky into twenty-eight lunar mansions tracking the moon's nightly progress. Indian astronomy uses twenty-seven or twenty-eight nakshatras for the same purpose, and Arabic tradition uses a comparable set of lunar stations, and the relationship between these three systems is a long-running scholarly question about whether they share an origin or arrived independently at a natural solution to tracking the moon. Mesoamerican calendars organised time by entirely different cycles. The recurring feature across all of them is the need to divide a continuous cycle into countable units for prediction and record, and the specific numbers chosen follow from whether the moon, the sun or the planets is the primary object being tracked.
