Where it is not wanted
Several traditions and contexts avoid it deliberately, which usefully shows what it is doing. Choral singing in many traditions asks for straight tone, because vibrato interferes with the tuning of chords, since two voices oscillating independently will beat against each other and blur the intervals that define the harmony, and this matters most in music built on pure intervals. Organ pipes produce no vibrato, and the tremulant that some organs offer is a mechanical approximation added deliberately. Electronic instruments must add it artificially, and early synthesisers sounded lifeless partly because their tones were too steady, which is why modulation controls appeared quickly. Some folk and traditional styles across the world use no vibrato or use a quite different ornamentation vocabulary of slides, trills and pitch bends.
