What Was a Lighthouse Keeper? A Job Defined by Not Stopping

A lighthouse is useful only if the light works every night without exception, which before automation meant somebody living there permanently to wind the mechanism, trim the wick, refill the oil and keep the glass clean. The work was unskilled in one sense and unforgiving in another, since a single lapse could put a ship on the rocks.
The nightly routine
The job was a set of repeating tasks whose timing was dictated by the equipment:
- •Lighting up before sunset and extinguishing after sunrise, with the times recorded in a log kept continuously
- •Winding the clockwork that rotated the lens assembly, which in many towers required rewinding every few hours through the night, so the keeper on watch could not sleep
- •Trimming the wick and topping up oil in the days before electricity, which is the origin of the nickname wickie for keepers
- •Cleaning the lens and the lantern glass daily, since salt spray, soot and dead insects all reduce the range and a dirty light is a shortened one
- •Sounding the fog signal when visibility closed in, which on some stations was operated by hand or by engine and was punishingly loud in a small building
- •Maintaining the fabric of the station, keeping records, reporting passing vessels and in many cases assisting with rescues
The three kinds of station
Conditions varied enormously, and keepers categorised stations by how hard they were to live on. A shore station sits on land with road access, allowing a keeper to live with their family, keep a garden and send children to school, and these were the sought-after postings. An island station is more isolated, dependent on boats for supplies and relief, and frequently housed families in a small community. A rock station is a tower built on a reef or offshore rock, where there is no land at all, accommodation is inside the tower, relief depends entirely on weather and keepers served in rotation without families, typically several weeks on and a shorter period ashore. The rock stations produced the hardest conditions and the most famous towers, including Eddystone, Bell Rock and Skerryvore, whose construction on submerged reefs using interlocking dovetailed masonry blocks laid in short working windows between tides is among the most impressive engineering of its period.
Isolation and its consequences
Two or three men confined in a tower for weeks produced predictable problems and one recurring practice. The rule requiring three keepers rather than two on isolated stations was adopted in Britain after an incident in which one of two keepers at a Welsh lighthouse died and the survivor, fearing he would be accused of murder, lashed the body outside rather than disposing of it and kept the light burning alone until relief arrived, arriving back visibly unrecognisable to those who knew him. Whether every detail of that account is accurate, the three-keeper rule that followed is documented and was standard thereafter. Relief could be delayed for weeks by weather, with stores running short. Mental strain, alcohol and disputes between keepers appear in service records. The most famous unsolved case is the disappearance of all three keepers from the Flannan Isles in 1900, found gone with the lamp cleaned and ready and an overturned chair, which has attracted a century of speculation and whose most probable explanation is a freak wave catching men securing equipment.
Automation and what remains
Automation proceeded over decades and was completed in most countries in the late twentieth century, with the last manned British lighthouse at North Foreland automated in 1998 and comparable dates elsewhere. The technology that permitted it was the combination of reliable electric lamps, automatic bulb changers, remote monitoring over telemetry and, for rotation, motors requiring no winding. The economic case was overwhelming, since a single monitoring centre can watch hundreds of lights. What was lost alongside the jobs was a network of people permanently stationed at points of maximum hazard who observed weather, reported shipping and assisted rescues, functions now covered by other means. Satellite navigation has since reduced dependence on lights generally, though they remain as an independent check that cannot be jammed or spoofed, which is a reason several authorities have declined to decommission them. Many towers survive as accommodation, museums and navigation marks, and a small number of keepers remain employed to maintain rather than to operate them.
