How Did Carrier Pigeons Work? A Bird That Only Flies One Way

A pigeon carrying a message is not delivering it to an address. It is going home, which is the only journey it will make, and everything about how the birds were used follows from that single constraint. The message travels because somebody first carried the bird away from the loft it wanted to return to.

The one-way problem

Homing pigeons return to their own loft with great reliability and will not fly to anywhere else, which means a pigeon post is inherently directional. To send a message from a moving army back to headquarters, the army must be carrying pigeons that were raised at headquarters, and once they are released the supply is exhausted until more birds are brought forward. That is why pigeon services involved substantial logistics of transporting birds by cart, lorry, ship and parachute, and why mobile lofts were developed, which were wagons housing a colony that could be moved slowly enough for the birds to re-learn the loft's position and then treat the new location as home. The birds were also carried on ships and aircraft precisely because a vessel in distress had no other way of reporting its position before radio, and several documented rescues followed a released bird reaching shore with coordinates. The one-way limitation is also a security property, since an intercepted bird reveals only the loft's general direction and a captured message, not a two-way conversation.

How they navigate

The mechanism is still not completely settled and appears to involve several systems used together:

  • A sun compass, using the sun's position corrected for time of day by an internal clock, demonstrated by experiments that shifted birds' clocks and produced predictable errors in their departure direction
  • Magnetic sensing, with evidence that pigeons detect the geomagnetic field and use it particularly under overcast skies
  • Olfactory navigation, supported by experiments showing that birds deprived of their sense of smell are impaired, suggesting they build a map from wind-borne odours learned at the loft
  • Visual landmarks over familiar ground, including evidence that experienced birds follow roads and features on routes they know
  • Infrasound, low-frequency sound from terrain and oceans, proposed to explain otherwise inexplicable mass disappearances on particular routes
  • A map-and-compass model overall, meaning the bird must first work out where it is and then which way to fly, which are separate problems solved by different senses

What they were used for

Pigeon messaging is ancient, recorded in the Mediterranean world and used to announce Olympic results and imperial news, and a Baghdad service operated in the twelfth century. The modern era began with commercial use, including a famous news agency that used pigeons to carry stock prices between cities faster than trains in the 1850s, which was the foundation of a business that outlived the method. Military use was extensive in both world wars, with hundreds of thousands of birds in service, and pigeons carried messages from besieged positions, from behind enemy lines and from aircraft that had come down. Several were decorated, including a bird credited with saving a battalion after being shot through and continuing, and the animal bravery medal instituted in Britain was awarded to more pigeons than to any other species. Birds were also parachuted to resistance groups in occupied Europe with questionnaires attached, and the intelligence returned was substantial enough that the Germans deployed hawks along the coast to intercept them.

Why the service ended and where it persists

Radio removed the need, and the last official military pigeon services were disbanded through the 1950s, though several countries kept small reserves into the modern period on the reasoning that birds work when electronic systems are jammed or destroyed. Isolated official uses persisted much longer, including police pigeon services in India that ran into the 1990s and were retired after they proved useful during natural disasters when communications failed. Racing is the living remainder of the tradition and is a serious international sport with substantial money involved, with birds released hundreds of kilometres from home and timed on arrival, and top breeding birds selling for sums that reach into the hundreds of thousands. The practice has attracted criticism over loss rates on long races and over the fate of birds that do not perform. Beyond sport, the species has become a laboratory model for navigation and cognition, with experiments demonstrating abilities in categorisation and self-recognition that complicate the bird's reputation.

The takeaway

A homing pigeon only ever flies to its own loft, so a message service is one-directional and requires physically carrying birds away from home first. Navigation appears to combine a sun compass corrected by an internal clock, magnetic sensing, learned wind-borne odours and familiar landmarks, with the bird solving position and direction as separate problems. Hundreds of thousands served in both wars, and racing is what survives.
