Subject

Animals & Nature

Every kind of creature, from the pets on your street to deep-sea fish and vanishing tigers - how animals live, behave and survive, one tiny step at a time.

Animals and Nature covers the living world as an interconnected system: habitats, adaptations, life cycles, food webs, migration, behaviour, conservation and the pressures ecosystems are under.

It overlaps with biology but approaches things from the outside in. Where biology starts with cells and works up, this track starts with whole animals in real environments and works towards the mechanisms behind what they do.

This is the track that makes the natural world legible. It is also, quietly, an argument about attention: most people can name dozens of brands and almost none of the species in their own garden.

Who this track is for

Strong primary and secondary coverage, with the ecology and conservation units reaching further.

How to approach it

  • Look for the pattern rather than memorising species one at a time
  • Adaptation questions are usually answerable from first principles
  • The ecosystem units connect to geography and climate, so read across
Study guide · 8 min readHow to Learn About Animals and NatureNatural history looks like a catalogue and becomes an explanation the moment evolution is in place. A guide to reading an animal's body for its way of life, and to why grouping by ancestry beats grouping by appearance.

What you will be able to do

  • Place an unfamiliar animal in the right group from its features
  • Explain a food web and say why the chain is short
  • Say why two similar-looking animals can be unrelated
  • Judge a conservation story by what it does about habitat

The thing people get wrong

That evolution improves animals towards some goal. Selection has no direction and no foresight; it only changes which individuals leave descendants in the conditions that happen to obtain.

If you only do 3 units

The first makes the variety navigable, the second explains most of the anatomy in the rest of the track, and the third is the single idea that turns the whole subject from a catalogue into an explanation.

    • Butterflycorrect
    • Beetlecorrect
    • Beecorrect
    • Grasshopper

Butterflies, beetles and bees all pass through a pupal stage.

  • Match the pairsLevel 2

    8. Match each big cat to a distinctive feature.

Where these questions come from. Each unit starts as a plan of the concepts it should cover and the difficulty it should span. Questions are written against that plan with AI assistance, then checked by a validator that rejects anything without a single defensible answer, an explanation, or plausible wrong options. How we write questions sets out the whole process, and corrections are fixed in the bank and reach the site and the app the same day.
