How Do Bagpipes Work? A Reed That Never Gets to Stop

Every other wind instrument stops when the player breathes in. A bagpipe does not, because the air driving the reeds comes from a bag under the player's arm rather than directly from their lungs, and the player refills the bag while the arm keeps squeezing. That single arrangement dictates everything else about how the instrument sounds and how it is played.

The parts

A bagpipe is a set of separate reed pipes fed from one reservoir, and each component has a specific job:

  • The bag, historically an animal skin and now often synthetic, which stores air and smooths the supply so the pressure stays steady while the player breathes
  • The blowpipe with a non-return valve, through which the player fills the bag, or in some traditions a bellows worked by the other arm, which keeps the reeds dry and allows the player to sing
  • The chanter, the melody pipe with finger holes, driven in the Highland pipes by a double reed similar in principle to an oboe's
  • Drones, separate pipes each sounding one fixed note continuously, driven by single reeds like a clarinet's, which are tuned to the chanter and never change
  • Reeds, which are the sound source in every pipe and which are sensitive to moisture and temperature, making them the main source of tuning trouble
  • Tuning slides on the drones, adjusted by the player before and during playing as the reeds warm and settle

Why the music sounds the way it does

Continuous air has a consequence that shapes the entire repertoire: the chanter cannot stop sounding, so notes cannot be separated by silence and cannot be articulated by tonguing as they are on other wind instruments. Every note runs into the next. The solution developed in pipe traditions is to separate notes with grace notes, extremely rapid movements of the fingers that interrupt the pitch momentarily and give the ear an edge to hear. Elaborated sequences of these, called embellishments, become an essential part of the melody rather than ornaments added to it, and in the Highland tradition they are codified into named figures learned as units. The chanter also has a fixed scale of about nine notes with no dynamic control, since loudness depends on air pressure and pressure must stay constant to keep the drones in tune, which means a piper cannot play louder or softer for expression and must produce all shaping through rhythm and ornamentation.

The variety

The Highland pipes dominate popular recognition and are one member of a large family across Europe, North Africa and western Asia, with substantial traditions in Ireland, Galicia, Brittany, Bulgaria, Turkey and elsewhere. The Irish uilleann pipes differ significantly: they are bellows-blown rather than mouth-blown, quieter, indoor instruments with a wider range of about two octaves, and they add regulators, keyed pipes the player can strike with the wrist to sound chords, which makes them among the most mechanically complex folk instruments anywhere. Northumbrian smallpipes are also bellows-blown, with a closed chanter allowing genuine staccato, which is the opposite solution to the same articulation problem. Bulgarian kaba gaida uses a large chanter and a distinctive ornamentation style. The common features across all of them are the bag, the reservoir principle and one or more drones, and the differences follow from indoor or outdoor use, from mouth or bellows supply and from local musical demands.

The tuning problem

Pipes are notoriously difficult to keep in tune and the reasons are physical. Cane reeds absorb moisture from the breath, which changes their stiffness and therefore their pitch, so a mouth-blown instrument drifts continuously during playing while a bellows-blown one is far more stable, which is the main reason several traditions adopted bellows. Temperature changes the speed of sound and therefore the pitch of every pipe, and the drones and chanter do not shift by identical amounts. The Highland chanter scale is not equal-tempered and is traditionally tuned so that its notes are consonant with the drones, which means it does not match a piano and is not supposed to. Pitch standards have risen substantially over the past century, which is why older recordings sound noticeably lower and why a modern chanter cannot simply be played with an old one. Synthetic reeds and bags have improved stability considerably, at some cost in tone, which is an ongoing argument within the tradition.
