Why Is One Side of That Ridge Steep and the Other Gentle? Tilted Rock

A ridge with a cliff on one flank and a long slope on the other is the edge of a tilted layer of hard rock, and the shape governs where the villages and springs sit.
How the shape arises
Start with layers of rock of differing hardness, laid down flat and then tilted gently by later earth movements. Erosion strips the softer layers faster, and where a resistant layer is exposed it stands out. Because the whole sequence is tilted, that resistant layer presents a broken edge on one side and a continuing surface on the other. The broken edge erodes back as a steep face. The continuing surface slopes away gently at the angle of the tilt. One ridge therefore has two entirely different flanks produced by the same process acting on the same rock.
The parts and their names
Each element of the form has a standard term:

- •The gentle back slope, following the tilt of the layer
- •The crest where the two meet, frequently the highest ground
- •The vale below the steep face, cut into softer rock
- •A spring line where water emerges at the base of the hard layer

Why the steep side retreats
The face does not stay put and the mechanism explains the outlying hills found in front of it. Water sinks through the permeable hard layer, travels down the tilt, and emerges where it meets an impermeable layer beneath, which is at the base of the steep face. That emerging water undercuts the softer rock below, the hard layer above loses support and collapses in blocks, and the face steps backwards. Over long periods the whole ridge migrates in the direction opposite to its gentle slope, leaving behind isolated remnants of the same hard layer standing in the lowland.
The related forms
Changing the angle of the tilt produces a family of related ridges, and the names distinguish them by steepness. Where the layers are nearly horizontal the result is a flat-topped plateau ending in a cliff rather than a ridge with two flanks. Where the tilt is gentle the classic asymmetric ridge appears. Where it is steeper the back slope becomes as steep as the face and the ridge is symmetrical. Where the layers are vertical the result is a narrow wall of rock standing on edge. All four are the same process acting on beds tilted by different amounts.
Why people settled along them
The form determined settlement patterns across large parts of lowland Britain and northern France for a thousand years, and the reason is water. Villages line up in a row at the base of the steep face where springs emerge reliably, giving a clean supply without wells. The land arrangement that follows is characteristic, with each settlement holding a strip running from the dry high ground down through the spring line to the damp vale, so that every community had pasture, arable and meadow. Roads run along the foot of the face connecting the settlements, which is why so many ancient routes follow these lines.
