What Is a Dawn Chorus? Why Birds All Sing at the Same Awkward Hour

Singing before sunrise is expensive and dangerous. It burns energy at the end of a night without food, it advertises a bird's position to predators, and it happens before there is enough light to feed. Several explanations compete and the honest answer is that more than one is probably true.

The competing explanations

The acoustic hypothesis observes that sound carries considerably further in the still cool air before dawn, with less turbulence and background noise, so a song broadcast then reaches more listeners for the same effort, and measurements support a genuine transmission advantage of this kind. The social hypothesis observes that dawn is when territorial boundaries are tested and when females are most fertile in the breeding season, so the timing tracks when the audience matters most. What urban noise has done

Birds in cities have altered their singing measurably in response to traffic noise, and the changes are among the clearest documented examples of behavioural adjustment to human disturbance. Urban individuals of several species sing at higher frequencies, which reduces masking by low-frequency traffic noise, and they sing more loudly, which is a well-documented effect where speakers raise their voices in noise. Some species shift their timing, singing earlier to precede the traffic peak or moving song into quieter periods. Those adjustments carry costs, since song frequency and amplitude are used by females to assess males, so a bird singing outside its optimal range may be assessed poorly. The pandemic reduction in traffic produced a natural experiment, with studies in San Francisco finding that white-crowned sparrows quickly sang more quietly and at lower frequencies, improving the quality of their songs and increasing the distance over which they carried, which indicates that the urban adjustments are plastic rather than genetic and are reversed when the noise stops.

Listening to it

The chorus is among the most accessible natural phenomena and requires only being outside early, with the best period running from late March through June in the temperate northern hemisphere and the peak roughly an hour before sunrise. Learning to separate species by ear is a skill that develops faster than most people expect, and recording applications that identify birdsong automatically have changed participation substantially, making it possible for a beginner to name what they are hearing in real time and contributing large volumes of data to monitoring schemes in the process. Organised dawn chorus walks and an annual international dawn chorus day exist precisely because the event rewards a guide. For monitoring purposes the chorus is valuable because it concentrates detectable activity into a predictable window, which is why standardised bird surveys specify early morning start times, and why automated recorders deployed for ecological monitoring are frequently programmed to capture exactly this period.
