Why Is There a Sachet of Beads in the Box? Water Is the Enemy

Small packets holding a material that absorbs water vapour protect goods from corrosion, mould and clumping during shipping and storage. The material is not poisonous, which is the opposite of what the warning suggests.
What the problem is
Air holds water vapour, and the amount it can hold falls as temperature falls, so a sealed container moved from a warm factory to a cold ship reaches a point where the air cannot hold what it contains and water condenses onto whatever is inside. That liquid water corrodes metal, allows mould to grow, softens cardboard, clumps powders and destroys electronics. The problem is worst in shipping, where a container crosses climates and experiences daily temperature swings for weeks, producing repeated condensation cycles that have a name in the trade. Sealing the package does not solve it, since the water is already inside at the moment of sealing.
The materials used
Several substances remove water vapour and each suits different conditions:
- •Silica gel, a porous glassy material that adsorbs water onto its internal surfaces
- •Clay, cheaper and effective at ambient conditions, used in bulk shipping
- •Molecular sieves, with pores of a precise size, used where extreme dryness is needed
- •Calcium chloride, which dissolves in the water it absorbs and holds enormous quantities
- •Calcium oxide, which reacts chemically rather than adsorbing
- •Activated charcoal blends, where odour removal is also wanted
How silica gel actually works
The commonest material is neither a gel nor silicon in the metallic sense, being an amorphous form of silicon dioxide manufactured with an enormous internal surface area, commonly several hundred square metres per gram, created by a network of tiny pores. Water molecules stick to those surfaces rather than being absorbed into the bulk, which is why the beads stay dry to the touch while holding up to about forty per cent of their weight in water. The process reverses on heating, so a saturated packet can be dried in an oven and reused indefinitely. Indicating versions contain a dye that changes colour when saturated, and the cobalt compound formerly used for this has been replaced in Europe because it is a suspected carcinogen.
The measurement that matters
Protecting goods properly means controlling relative humidity rather than removing every trace of water, and the distinction determines how much material is needed. Relative humidity is the amount of water in the air as a proportion of what that air could hold at its temperature, and corrosion, mould and clumping each begin above characteristic thresholds, commonly cited around sixty per cent for mould and forty for metal corrosion. A package therefore needs enough absorbing material to hold the humidity below the relevant threshold for the expected duration, given how much water is present and how much leaks in through the packaging. Industry calculates that from the package area, the barrier properties of the material and the transit time, and expresses the requirement in standardised units.
Why the packet says do not eat
The warning is the most visible thing about these packets and it causes a widespread misunderstanding, since the contents of a standard silica packet are not toxic and swallowing one is not a poisoning emergency. The material is chemically inert and passes through undigested. The warning exists because the packet is a choking hazard for small children, because the beads may carry additives or indicating dyes, and because manufacturers face liability for anything unlabelled. Poison control centres report large numbers of calls about these packets annually and treat almost all as non-toxic. Calcium oxide packets are a genuine exception, since that material reacts with moisture and generates heat, and swallowing one causes real chemical burns.
