What Is a Dinosaur Cast? The Copy That Does the Original's Work

Most mounted skeletons on display are replicas, which sounds like a disappointment and is the arrangement that makes both display and research possible. A cast can be mounted, shipped, handled and studied while the original stays where researchers can reach it.

How one is made

Traditional casting takes a mould from the prepared specimen, generally in flexible silicone rubber supported by a rigid outer shell so that undercuts can be released without damage, with a separating agent applied first so the mould does not bond to the fossil. Resin or plastic is then cast into that mould, frequently with fillers to adjust weight and rigidity, and the result is painted by hand to match the original, which is a skilled job since a badly painted cast is immediately obvious. Digital methods have largely supplemented this, with specimens scanned by computed tomography, photogrammetry or laser scanning and reproduced by machining or three-dimensional printing at any scale. Digital capture has real advantages, since it does not touch the specimen at all, it records internal structure, it can correct distortion computationally before printing, and the file can be sent anywhere. It also removes the mould-making risk entirely, since applying rubber to a fragile fossil is itself a hazard.

Why museums use them

The reasons are practical and they favour replicas for nearly every display purpose:

  • Weight, since fossil bone is dense rock and a mounted original imposes loads that a cast does not, which simplifies the armature and the building
  • Safety of the specimen, since a mounted fossil cannot easily be examined, sampled or lent, and is exposed to light, humidity and vibration
  • Distribution, since one specimen can be cast many times and the same animal displayed on several continents
  • Completion, since missing elements can be sculpted or mirrored and integrated invisibly, which a mount of original material cannot do
  • Handling, since cast material can be touched by visitors, used in schools and taken to outreach events
  • Cost, since acquiring a cast is vastly cheaper than acquiring a specimen and is available to institutions that could never buy one

The history of the practice

Distributing casts is far older than modern museums and was a deliberate policy in the nineteenth century, when several institutions exchanged replicas as a matter of scientific courtesy and to build collections cheaply. The best-known episode involved a wealthy industrialist funding casts of a single large sauropod skeleton and presenting them to museums across Europe and Latin America, with the result that the same animal was mounted in many capitals and became one of the most widely seen fossils in the world. Plaster was the standard material for most of that period, which is heavy, brittle and prone to damage, and many early casts have deteriorated or been replaced. The practice built the visual vocabulary of dinosaurs for the general public, since for most of the twentieth century the skeletons people saw were copies of a small number of specimens, which narrowed the impression of what the group contained.

What gets lost

The trade is not free and the objections are worth stating. A cast reproduces surface geometry and nothing else, so no chemical, isotopic, histological or internal analysis is possible on it, and a researcher needing those must reach the original. Surface detail can be lost in moulding, particularly fine texture, and successive generations of casts made from casts degrade progressively, which is a documented problem where a mould was taken from an existing replica rather than from the specimen. Painting introduces interpretation, since a cast painted to look like fossil bone conceals which parts are reconstructed. And visitors are frequently not told, which raises a straightforward honesty question that museums have addressed unevenly, with some labelling casts clearly and others leaving the impression that the mounted skeleton is the animal. The profession has moved towards disclosure, partly under criticism and partly because visitors who discover the fact independently react badly.

The access argument

Casts and now digital models have become central to a dispute about who can study fossils. Important specimens are concentrated in a small number of wealthy institutions, frequently in countries other than those the fossils came from, which means researchers elsewhere cannot examine the material their own regions produced. Casts partly address that, since they are cheap to distribute, and digital scans address it further, since a file costs nothing to send. Several institutions have made scan libraries openly available and others have not, and the arguments against release concern commercial value, potential misuse and the cost of producing the scans. The debate connects to wider questions about repatriation of specimens and about scientific colonialism, with research on material from one country published by institutions in another without local involvement being a documented and criticised pattern. Open scanning does not resolve those questions and it removes one of the practical barriers.

The takeaway

A rubber mould over a rigid shell or a digital scan reproduces the surface, and a replica can be mounted, shipped, handled and taught with while the original stays accessible to researchers. Weight alone makes mounting originals impractical. Casts carry no chemical or internal information, degrade when copied from copies, and are frequently not labelled as replicas, which museums have addressed unevenly.
