What Is a Drone Note? One Pitch Held Under Everything Else

A drone is a single sustained pitch that continues while the melody moves above it. That sounds like the simplest possible accompaniment and it does something specific: every note of the melody is heard in relation to the drone, so the tuning and the character of each interval become audible in a way they otherwise are not.
What it does to the melody
A held pitch establishes a fixed reference against which everything else is measured. Without one, a listener tracks a melody by the intervals between successive notes, which allows the tuning to drift and makes the relationship of each note to the key implicit. With one, every melodic note forms an interval with the drone simultaneously, so its consonance or tension is directly heard, and small tuning differences become obvious because beating occurs between the two sounding pitches. That has consequences for how the music works. Modal music benefits enormously, since the character of a mode consists precisely in the pattern of intervals above its central note, and a drone makes that pattern audible continuously rather than requiring the listener to remember it. Harmonic movement, by contrast, is constrained, because a fixed bass limits which chords make sense, which is why drone-based traditions generally develop melodic and rhythmic complexity rather than chord progressions. How instruments produce one
Instrument designs across many traditions incorporate a sustained pitch structurally rather than leaving it to a second player:

Where it sits in different traditions
Indian classical music is the clearest case, where the tanpura sounds throughout a performance and the entire system of ragas is understood in relation to a tonic that is never absent, which makes the microtonal inflections central to the tradition audible and meaningful. Scottish and Irish piping, Balkan and Mediterranean traditions, Norwegian and Swedish fiddle music and numerous others build around the same principle. European art music largely abandoned it as functional harmony developed, since a moving bass line is incompatible with a fixed one, and it survives there chiefly in the pedal point, a held bass note over which harmonies change and accumulate tension until it resolves, which composers use deliberately at moments of expectation, and in pastoral movements that evoke bagpipes. Minimalist composers from the 1960s reintroduced sustained pitches at length, and one strand of that work explored tuning systems in which held tones reveal relationships that equal temperament conceals, which returns the technique to its original function.
Why sustained sound affects listeners
The effect of continuous tone is not only structural. A sustained pitch removes the beginnings and endings that normally segment music into events, which changes the experience of time and is part of why drone-based music is described as meditative and is used in ritual and devotional contexts across many traditions. Acoustically, a rich drone contains a full harmonic series, and melodic notes that coincide with those harmonics lock into place audibly while others create beating, so the listener receives constant information about tuning without needing any training to notice it. That is exploited deliberately in traditions using just intonation, where intervals are tuned to simple frequency ratios and sound notably pure against a drone, in contrast to equal temperament where most intervals are slightly out and beat gently. Modern ambient and electronic music has adopted sustained textures extensively, and the recurring use of the technique across contexts as different as devotional singing and experimental electronics suggests the effect rests on something in the hearing rather than in any one culture.
