How Do Fossils Get Faked or Ruined? Mistakes Between the Rock and the Museum

A fossil reaches a museum through cleaning, reconstruction and mounting, and every stage can introduce error. Some errors are honest, some are commercial, and one famous case combined two animals into a non-existent species.

What preparation involves

A fossil arrives encased in rock and must be separated from it, which is slow, skilled and irreversible. Preparators work with fine tools, small air-powered chisels and sometimes acids that dissolve the surrounding rock while leaving the bone, and the work proceeds under magnification over weeks or months for a single specimen. Consolidants are applied to hold fragile material together. Breaks are repaired with adhesives. Missing parts may be filled with modelling material so a specimen can be mounted, and the convention is that such fills are distinguishable from real bone on close inspection. Every one of those steps involves judgement, and a wrong judgement removes evidence that cannot be recovered, since the rock that was chipped away is gone.

How errors get in

The failure modes are recognised and each has produced published examples:

  • Over-preparation, removing material that was part of the fossil
  • Reconstruction that reflects what the preparator expected rather than what was there
  • Composite specimens assembled from more than one individual and presented as one
  • Deliberate fabrication, adding or carving parts to increase commercial value
  • Loss of contextual information when a specimen is collected without records
  • Fills and repairs that later observers mistake for original material

The famous forgery

A specimen purchased at a fossil fair in 1999 and publicised as a feathered dinosaur linking dinosaurs to birds turned out to be two animals glued together. The upper part came from a bird and the tail from a small dinosaur, joined and finished by a commercial preparer in China, and the composite was announced in a popular magazine before peer review. Scanning revealed the join within months, and Chinese and American researchers published the correction. The episode did serious damage because it appeared to support a genuine and well-evidenced conclusion, which opponents of that conclusion then cited, and because it was an object smuggled out of its country of origin and bought without provenance. It is now used as the standard teaching case for why unprovenanced specimens are not studied.

The older fakes

Fossil forgery has a long history and the earlier cases established several lessons. A German professor in the eighteenth century was presented over a long period with carved stones depicting animals, plants and even Hebrew letters, which he published as genuine before discovering that colleagues had manufactured them to humiliate him. The Piltdown specimen, presented from 1912 as an early human from England, combined a human skull with an orangutan jaw filed and stained to match, and was accepted for four decades partly because it fitted expectations about where and how humans evolved, which is the more important lesson. It was exposed in 1953 by chemical testing that the earlier researchers could have applied. Both cases show that a forgery succeeds by supplying what its audience wants rather than by being technically good.

How the risk is managed

The safeguards developed in response are procedural rather than technical. Specimens without documented collection locality and legal export are refused by most journals and museums, which removes the commercial market's material from the scientific record. Computed tomography scanning reveals internal structure, joins, fills and inserted material without damaging the specimen, and is now routine for anything unusual. Preparation is documented photographically at each stage so that later researchers can see what was removed. Fills are made in a colour or material distinguishable from bone. Specimens are deposited in public collections where others can examine them, which is a condition of publication. And extraordinary claims are expected to rest on specimens that several independent researchers have handled.
