What Is Home Advantage? A Real Effect With Contested Causes

Teams win more often at home across essentially every sport in which it has been measured, and the size of the effect is large enough to shape league structures, scheduling and betting markets. Why it happens has been argued about for decades, and one natural experiment settled part of it.

The size of the effect

Home teams win a clear majority of decided matches in most team sports, with football historically around sixty percent of points taken at home in major European leagues, and comparable or larger effects in basketball and handball, smaller ones in baseball and cricket. The effect varies by sport, by league and over time, and it has declined measurably over recent decades in several leagues, which is itself a clue since the factors that have changed include travel comfort, pitch standardisation and officiating technology. It appears in individual sports too, though more weakly. It is large enough to matter commercially and structurally, since leagues are designed around balanced home and away fixtures precisely to neutralise it, knockout competitions with two legs exist for the same reason, and the seeding advantage of hosting a deciding game is a significant prize in playoff formats.

The candidate explanations

Researchers have proposed a standard list and each has partial support:

  • Crowd support, encouraging the home team and intimidating visitors, which is the folk explanation and the hardest to test directly
  • Referee bias, with officials awarding marginal decisions to the home side under crowd pressure, supported by studies of added time, fouls and penalties
  • Travel fatigue, which shows measurable effects for long journeys and time zone changes and cannot explain advantage in local derbies
  • Familiarity with the venue, including pitch dimensions, surface, lighting and background, which is significant in some sports and negligible in others
  • Territoriality and hormonal responses, with some evidence of elevated testosterone in home players, which is suggestive and based on small samples
  • Tactical and psychological differences, since teams play more aggressively at home and more cautiously away, which may be a response to the advantage rather than a cause of it

What empty stadiums showed

The suspension of crowds during the pandemic created a natural experiment of a size that researchers could not otherwise have arranged, with thousands of professional matches played in empty stadiums under otherwise normal conditions. The results were consistent across multiple leagues and independent analyses: home advantage shrank substantially but did not disappear, and the clearest single change was in refereeing. Home teams received markedly fewer favourable decisions, with the gap in yellow cards, fouls and penalties narrowing sharply, which supports the referee bias explanation as a major component. Player performance metrics changed less than decision metrics, which suggests that crowd effects operate more on officials than on athletes. The residual advantage that remained in empty stadiums points at travel, familiarity and tactical asymmetry as genuine contributors. That is an unusually clean result for a question of this kind, and it was possible only because an entire category of variable was removed simultaneously across many competitions.

How officials came to be the answer

Evidence pointing at officials predated the pandemic and was already substantial. Studies of added time in football found referees adding more when the home team was behind and less when ahead, with the difference large enough to affect outcomes. An experiment showed qualified referees watching recorded matches awarded more fouls against the away side when crowd noise was audible than when it was muted, which isolates the mechanism cleanly. Work on attendance found the advantage larger in stadiums with crowds close to the pitch and smaller where a running track separated them. The explanation generally offered is not corruption but social conformity operating under time pressure and uncertainty, since an official making an instant judgement in an ambiguous situation is influenced by the immediate and unanimous reaction of thousands of people. Technological review systems have reduced the effect in sports that adopted them, which is consistent with the account, since review removes the time pressure and the ambiguity that the bias depends on.
