What Is a Knot? The Buried Base of a Branch, and Why It Matters

A knot in a board is where a branch was, swallowed by the growing trunk and cut through by the saw. Whether it weakens the timber depends on how it was attached, which is decided long before the tree is felled.

How a knot forms

A branch grows outward from the trunk, and as the trunk thickens it adds wood around the base of that branch, enclosing it. The branch wood and the trunk wood are continuous while the branch is alive, with the fibres of each growth ring wrapping around the base, so the branch is genuinely part of the structure. When the branch dies, usually from being shaded by growth above it, the trunk keeps thickening and continues to enclose the now-dead stub, but the new wood forms around it rather than joining to it, so the dead stub sits in a socket without connection. Eventually the stub is completely buried and the trunk grows clear wood over it. Cutting a board through that region exposes the branch base as a knot.

The two kinds and what they mean

The difference between them determines almost everything about the timber:

  • An intergrown or live knot, formed while the branch was alive, with fibres continuous into the surrounding wood
  • An encased or dead knot, formed after the branch died, sitting loose in a socket with a dark ring of bark around it
  • Dead knots can fall out entirely, leaving a hole, which is why they are graded harshly
  • Live knots stay in place and are structurally less damaging
  • Knot size relative to the width of the board matters as much as the type
  • Position matters too, since a knot at the edge of a beam under load is far worse than one at the centre

Why knots weaken timber

The reason is grain direction rather than the knot itself. Wood is enormously stronger along the grain than across it, and around a knot the fibres of the surrounding wood are deflected to flow around the obstruction, so a board that is straight-grained elsewhere has a region where the fibres run at a steep angle to the length. When the board is loaded, that sloping grain is what fails, and the failure begins in the deflected wood rather than in the knot. A knot also interrupts the continuity of the fibres entirely where it is cut through, removing material that would otherwise carry load. The practical consequences appear in timber grading, where the rules specify permitted knot sizes and positions by grade, and where a single large knot in the wrong place downgrades an otherwise excellent board.

Working around them

Woodworkers deal with knots constantly and the accumulated practice is specific. A dead knot is drilled out and plugged with a piece of matching wood where appearance matters, or filled with resin where it does not. Resin bleeding through paint from a knot is prevented by sealing it first, which is what knotting solution is for and why skipping that step shows through within a year. A knot is avoided at any point where a joint is cut or a fixing goes in, since both the hardness and the grain direction make it unreliable there. Hand tools tear out around a knot because the grain reverses, so the cut is taken from the other direction or the tool is set for a finer shaving. And in furniture making knots are increasingly chosen rather than rejected, since the figure they produce is now considered a feature and is priced accordingly.

What foresters do about it

The whole problem is controllable in advance, which is why plantation practice looks the way it does. Growing trees close together shades the lower branches early, killing them while they are small so the resulting knots are small and are buried under a long length of clear wood, which is the main reason timber plantations are planted densely and thinned later. Pruning the lower branches deliberately achieves the same thing faster and produces clear wood of high value, at a labour cost that has to be justified by the species and the market. The dead branch is left to fall off or is cut flush, and everything the trunk adds afterwards is knot-free. Trees grown in the open with full light keep their lower branches and produce heavily knotted timber, which is why an ornamental tree rarely yields good boards.
