What Is a Living Fossil? A Phrase That Causes More Confusion Than It Solves

Certain animals and plants closely resemble fossils from hundreds of millions of years ago, and the label attached to them suggests they stopped evolving. They did not. The phrase describes an appearance, and biologists use it with steadily more discomfort because of what people take it to mean.

What the term actually picks out

Darwin coined the phrase and applied it loosely to organisms that appear to have changed little and that survive as isolated remnants of formerly diverse groups. Several distinct situations get bundled under it, and they are not the same thing. Morphological stasis means the visible form has changed little over a long period, which is genuinely observed in some lineages. Low diversity means a once large group is now represented by very few species, which describes a history of extinction rather than of stagnation. A long gap in the fossil record followed by a living discovery produces the dramatic cases, where an organism was known only as a fossil and then turned up alive. And relict distribution means surviving in a small part of a formerly wide range. An organism may show one of these without the others, and the label gets applied when any of them is present, which is a large part of why it misleads.

The usual examples

The standard list contains cases that differ substantially from one another:

  • The coelacanth, known from fossils and assumed extinct for some sixty-six million years until one was caught off South Africa in 1938, which is the classic rediscovery
  • The ginkgo, a single surviving species of a formerly diverse group, cultivated widely and nearly extinct in the wild
  • Horseshoe crabs, resembling Palaeozoic relatives and not closely related to true crabs at all
  • The nautilus, a shelled cephalopod surviving from a group that once dominated the seas
  • The Wollemi pine, found alive in an Australian gorge in 1994 after being known only as a fossil
  • The tuatara, the only survivor of an order of reptiles, and notable for having one of the fastest measured rates of molecular evolution despite its unchanged appearance

Why nothing stopped evolving

Outward similarity does not mean genetic or evolutionary stasis, and the evidence against it is direct. Modern coelacanths belong to different genera from their fossil relatives and differ in numerous anatomical details, and genomic work found their genes evolving slowly in some respects and not uniformly. The tuatara's rapid molecular evolution alongside conserved morphology is the clearest demonstration that the two can decouple entirely. Evolution does not require change: a lineage occupying a stable environment with a well-adapted body plan experiences stabilising selection, which actively removes variants in both directions and preserves the existing form, so stasis is a result of continuing selection rather than an absence of it. Fossil preservation also favours hard parts and coarse morphology, so two organisms that look identical in the rock may have differed enormously in physiology, behaviour, colour and life history, none of which fossilises. Calling something unchanged therefore says as much about the limits of the fossil record as about the organism.

Why the phrase persists

Biologists have proposed replacing it, and suggested alternatives include describing organisms as members of depauperate lineages or as phylogenetic relicts, none of which has caught on outside the literature. The phrase survives because it does communicate something real and interesting to a general audience, and because the rediscovery stories genuinely are remarkable. The harm is specific rather than vague. It supports a misunderstanding of evolution as a ladder of progress on which some organisms stalled, when the correct picture is a branching tree on which every surviving lineage is equally modern. It obscures the actual scientific interest of these organisms, which is what their long survival and their isolated position reveal about extinction, adaptation and the structure of the tree of life. And it occasionally misleads conservation priorities, since a species valued as a relic may attract attention that its actual threat status does not warrant while genuinely endangered relatives go unnoticed. Several conservation schemes now rank species by their evolutionary distinctness explicitly, which captures what the phrase was reaching for without the implication of stagnation.

The takeaway

The label bundles together unchanged appearance, a shrunken formerly diverse group, rediscovery after a long fossil gap and a relict range, and an organism can have one without the others. Stasis in form is produced by continuing stabilising selection rather than by evolution stopping, and the tuatara looks ancient while evolving molecularly faster than almost anything measured. Fossils preserve hard parts, so identical rock impressions hide enormous unseen difference.
