How Do You Tell Two Identical Mushrooms Apart? Collect What Falls

Leaving a mushroom cap on paper overnight deposits millions of spores in a pattern that reveals their colour, and that colour is one of the most reliable identification characters there is. The technique costs nothing.

Why colour in bulk matters

A single spore is microscopic and nearly colourless, so the colour of a species is visible only when a great many are collected together, which is what the technique does. That bulk colour is a character that stays consistent within a species and differs between species that can look identical in the field, so it separates groups that cap shape, size and habitat do not. It is also a character that does not depend on how the specimen has been handled, unlike surface colour which fades and bruises. Because the colour reflects the pigments in the spore wall, it tracks genuine relatedness reasonably well, which is why the major groupings used in older classification were built on it.

How to make one

The method is simple and a few details determine whether it works:

  • Cut the stem off flush so the cap sits flat on the surface
  • Place the cap gill side down on paper, using half white and half black to judge pale colours
  • Cover it with a bowl or glass to stop draughts and keep the humidity up
  • Leave it several hours or overnight, since a dry or immature cap may drop nothing
  • Lift the cap straight up rather than sliding it, which smears the deposit
  • Judge the colour where the deposit is thick, in daylight rather than artificial light

What the result tells you

The colours fall into broad categories and each narrows the possibilities substantially. White to cream covers a very large number of groups including several of the most dangerous. Pink to salmon indicates a much smaller set. Brown in its various shades, from rust to clay to cigar, separates several large families that otherwise resemble each other closely. Purple brown to black is characteristic of another set. The distinction between white and pale pink, or between rust brown and clay brown, is exactly the kind of judgement that the print makes possible and field observation does not. It is one character among several rather than an answer on its own, and it is used alongside gill attachment, stem features, smell, habitat and microscopic detail.

What the cap is for

The structure producing the deposit is worth understanding, because it explains why the technique works at all. The visible mushroom is the reproductive part of an organism whose main body is a network of fine threads spread through soil or wood, frequently over a large area and for many years. That body produces a fruiting structure when conditions suit, and the entire purpose of the cap is to hold a spore-bearing surface at a useful height, shelter it from rain and release spores into moving air. Gills, pores and teeth are all ways of maximising that surface within a compact shape. A single large cap releases spores in the billions over a few days. The deposit on paper is simply that process, captured on a surface instead of dispersed.

The safety point

This technique matters for identification and is not a test for edibility, and the distinction has to be stated plainly. There is no test, colour-based or otherwise, that distinguishes safe from poisonous fungi as a category, and every folk rule claiming to do so is false, including the ones about silver spoons, peeling caps, insect damage and animals eating them. Several of the most dangerous species produce white deposits and look unremarkable. Accurate identification to species, using all available characters and confirmed against reliable references or an experienced person, is the only approach, and the consequences of error with certain species are severe and delayed, with symptoms appearing many hours after eating and after the damage is done.
