Why Keep a Flame Burning All Year? Something Has to Light the Gas

A small permanent flame in a gas appliance exists to ignite the main burner instantly and to prove that ignition is possible. Modern appliances have replaced it, for good reasons.

What it is doing

The small flame burns continuously on a dedicated supply of gas, positioned so that when the main valve opens the gas reaching the burner passes through or beside it and lights at once. That instant ignition matters, because gas accumulating unlit for even a few seconds before finding a source is how explosions happen. The flame also serves a second and more important purpose, which is providing evidence that the appliance is capable of lighting, and the safety system is built around detecting whether it is present rather than around the flame itself.

How the safety device works

The mechanism is elegant and entirely self-powered:

  • A thermocouple tip sits in the small flame
  • Two dissimilar metals joined at that tip generate a tiny voltage when hot
  • That voltage energises an electromagnet holding the gas valve open
  • If the flame goes out, the tip cools and the voltage falls
  • The magnet releases and a spring shuts the valve
  • So gas cannot flow unless the flame is actually burning

Why it was abandoned

The arrangement burns gas continuously for as long as the appliance is installed, which is the objection. A typical domestic one consumes a small but constant quantity, and estimates commonly put the annual cost at a noticeable fraction of an appliance's total gas use, with figures for older heaters running higher still. That gas is entirely wasted for most of the year, and in a warm month it heats a room nobody wants heated. Regulations in several countries have banned continuous versions in new appliances, and the running cost alone made electronic replacements attractive as soon as they were reliable.

What to do when it goes out

Relighting one is a routine task with a specific sequence, and the sequence exists because of what can go wrong. The gas is turned off and left off for several minutes, which lets any accumulation disperse before a flame is introduced, and this is the step people skip. The control is then set to its ignition position, which opens only the small supply, and the flame is lit while the control is held down, because the thermocouple has not yet warmed enough to hold the valve. It must be held for roughly half a minute before releasing. If the flame dies on release, the thermocouple is usually failing, which is a cheap part and a common repair.

What replaced it

Modern appliances light on demand and prove the flame differently. A spark generator, either piezoelectric or mains-powered, produces a spark at the burner when the valve opens, and a hot surface igniter, which is a ceramic element heated until it glows, does the same job silently. Proving is done electronically, most commonly by flame rectification, which passes a small alternating current through the flame itself and detects that it conducts in one direction more than the other, a property no other condition mimics. That method proves the flame is present at the burner within a fraction of a second and shuts the gas if it is not, which is faster and more reliable than a thermocouple.
