Where Did the Bodies Go? Mass Burial When the Dead Outnumber the Living

Epidemics produce more dead than a community can bury in the ordinary way, and the burials that result are archaeologically distinctive. Excavating them has overturned several assumptions about how people behaved during them.

What the burials look like

A mass burial from an epidemic is identified by several features together: many individuals interred in a single event rather than accumulated over time, a demographic profile including adults of working age rather than the usual excess of infants and the elderly, and an absence of the injuries that would indicate a battle. The bodies may be in a single large cut or in trenches, and the arrangement varies from carefully laid out in rows to genuinely disordered. Dating comes from associated objects, from radiocarbon and increasingly from documentary records where a specific burial ground was established by order. The pathogen itself can now frequently be identified from DNA recovered from tooth pulp, which has transformed the field by confirming which disease a given burial represents rather than leaving it inferred.

What excavation has shown

The findings have corrected several long-standing assumptions:

  • Bodies are usually laid out carefully in rows rather than thrown in, even in the largest burials
  • Shrouds, coffins and observance of orientation appear in many examples
  • The demographic profile shows the disease killing across ages rather than only the weak
  • Skeletal evidence indicates that those in poor prior health were more likely to die, which had been disputed
  • The number of such burials is smaller than expected, since most victims received ordinary burial
  • Sites were frequently established in advance by civic or church authorities rather than improvised

The London excavations

Work in London has been particularly informative because documentary and archaeological evidence can be compared directly. A burial ground at East Smithfield was established by order in 1348 specifically for victims of the arriving epidemic, and its excavation in the 1980s produced hundreds of individuals in a securely dated context, which made it a reference site for the period. Bodies there were laid in trenches in neat rows, stacked in layers, with evidence of care. Later work during construction of a railway across the city uncovered further burial grounds including one from the seventeenth century outbreak. Analysis of remains from these sites identified the responsible bacterium from ancient DNA, settling a long argument about whether the medieval disease was the same organism as the modern one, and has since been used to reconstruct how the pathogen changed over time.

What ancient DNA added

The ability to recover pathogen DNA from skeletal remains transformed this area within about fifteen years and the specific gains are worth listing. It confirmed which organism caused the medieval pandemic, ending a long argument in which several researchers had proposed alternatives on epidemiological grounds. It established that the same organism caused the sixth century pandemic, linking two events separated by eight centuries. It allowed the genome of historical strains to be reconstructed and compared with modern ones, showing which changes occurred and when, and indicating that the medieval strain was not obviously more virulent than modern ones, which shifts the explanation for its severity towards conditions rather than the pathogen. It has since been applied to other diseases and to individuals rather than only to mass burials.

What they say about the living

The burials are evidence about social response as much as about mortality. Careful arrangement under extreme pressure indicates that communities maintained ritual obligations when it would have been far easier not to, which contradicts the picture of collapse presented in several contemporary written accounts and repeated since. The establishment of dedicated grounds by order shows administrative capacity functioning during a catastrophe. The scarcity of mass burials relative to total mortality indicates that ordinary arrangements coped in most places most of the time. Where genuine disorder does appear, in a minority of sites, it marks the worst affected moments rather than the general case. The written sources, mostly produced by educated observers describing a terrifying event, appear to have described the exceptional rather than the typical.
