What Is a Premise? The Part of an Argument Nobody Examines

An argument consists of premises offered in support of a conclusion, and most disagreement that looks like disagreement about the conclusion is really disagreement about a premise that neither party has stated. Learning to extract them is the single most useful analytical skill available.

Identifying the structure

Ordinary prose does not label its parts, so analysing an argument means reconstructing it: finding the conclusion, finding the statements offered in its support, and identifying anything assumed but not said. Indicator words help, since therefore, thus, hence and so precede conclusions while because, since, given that and for precede premises, and their absence means the structure must be inferred from what is supporting what. The reconstruction is an interpretive act rather than a mechanical one, and the principle of charity requires reconstructing the strongest version of the argument available rather than the weakest, both because it is fair and because refuting a weak version establishes nothing. Two failures recur. Attacking a reconstruction the arguer would not recognise is the straw man. Reconstructing something stronger than was actually meant and then attacking the original anyway is its mirror image. The test of a good reconstruction is whether the arguer would accept it as what they meant.

The hidden ones

Most real arguments leave premises unstated, which is where the interesting disagreements live:

  • An enthymeme is an argument with a suppressed premise, which is the normal form of everyday reasoning since stating the obvious is tedious
  • Suppressed premises are frequently the contested ones, so an argument that a policy will reduce cost assumes that reducing cost is what matters
  • Bridging assumptions connect premises to conclusions and are invisible precisely because they seem obvious to the arguer
  • Definitional assumptions build a conclusion into the meaning of a term, which is where disputes about what counts as something really sit
  • Empirical assumptions about how the world works, which are checkable once identified and untestable while hidden
  • Value assumptions, which cannot be settled by evidence and which frequently masquerade as factual claims

Validity and truth

Two properties are assessed separately and confusing them causes constant trouble. Validity concerns the structure, meaning whether the conclusion follows if the premises are true, and it says nothing about whether they are. An argument can be perfectly valid with false premises and a false conclusion. Soundness requires both, meaning a valid structure and true premises, and only a sound argument establishes its conclusion. That separation is useful because the two problems are addressed differently: a structural failure is shown by producing a case where the premises hold and the conclusion fails, while a premise failure is shown by evidence. It also explains a common frustration, since demonstrating that an argument is invalid does not show the conclusion is false, and demonstrating that a premise is false does not either, because a true conclusion can be supported by bad arguments. The correct response to a bad argument for something is that the argument fails, not that the claim is refuted.

Premises that cannot be examined

Some statements resist being treated as premises at all and recognising them saves effort. A claim with no specified content, such as an appeal to what everyone knows or to the nature of things, cannot be assessed until it is made specific, and asking for the specific version frequently ends the argument. A claim made unfalsifiable by construction, so that no evidence could count against it, is not doing evidential work whatever its rhetorical effect. A premise that simply restates the conclusion in other words makes the argument circular, which is valid and useless. A premise that is true only under a definition the arguer has not disclosed shifts the dispute to the definition. And an appeal to an authority is a premise about that authority's reliability, which is examinable, rather than a shortcut around examination. In each case the useful move is the same, which is to ask what the premise would have to mean for the argument to work and whether it is plausible under that reading.

How to use this in practice

The technique earns its keep in ordinary disagreement. When two people argue past each other, writing out the argument as premises and conclusion nearly always reveals that they agree about most of it and differ on one unstated assumption, which converts an unproductive exchange into a specific question. Identifying which premise is doing the work indicates what evidence would be relevant, and frequently reveals that the dispute is not empirical at all. Asking what would have to be true for the conclusion to follow surfaces the bridging assumption directly. Checking whether a premise is one the other party could accept distinguishes an argument that might persuade from one that begs the question. And noticing when an argument is valid but unsound, or sound but irrelevant to what is actually in dispute, prevents a great deal of wasted effort. None of this requires formal notation, which is why the skill transfers well outside philosophy.
