What Is a Stem Group? The Relatives That Came Before the Group Proper

Animals that are closely related to a living group while falling outside it need a name, and stem group is that name. The distinction sounds like bookkeeping and it resolves a persistent confusion about what it means to call an extinct animal an early member of anything.
The distinction
A crown group consists of the last common ancestor of all living members of a group and every descendant of that ancestor, living or extinct. A stem group consists of extinct lineages that branched off before that common ancestor but after the split from the group's nearest living relatives, so they are closer to the group than to anything else while falling outside it. The total group is both together. That arrangement exists because it is defined entirely by branching rather than by anatomy, so membership is a matter of relationship rather than of whether an animal looks the part. It also solves an awkwardness, since an extinct animal possessing some but not all of a group's characteristic features cannot be sensibly included or excluded on anatomical grounds, and placing it on the stem says exactly what is meant: it is on the lineage leading to the group, it has acquired some of the features, and it branched before the living members' common ancestor.
Why it matters
The distinction changes several statements that are otherwise misleading:
- •The age of a group depends entirely on which definition is used, since the crown group is always younger than the total group and frequently by a great deal
- •Molecular clock estimates generally date crown groups while fossils frequently record stem members, which is a substantial part of why the two disagree

- •The framework applies at every level, so stem arthropods, stem tetrapods and stem primates are all meaningful categories
Where the framework came from
The concepts developed alongside cladistics, the approach to classification that groups organisms strictly by shared ancestry and rejects groups defined by overall similarity or by shared absence of features. That approach, developed from the work of Willi Hennig in the mid-twentieth century and adopted widely from the 1970s, requires every named group to include an ancestor and all its descendants, which immediately abolishes several traditional categories. Reptiles in the traditional sense is the standard example, since it excludes birds while including their ancestors, and under the cladistic requirement either birds are reptiles or the category is abandoned. Fish in the traditional sense has the same problem with respect to land vertebrates. The crown and stem vocabulary arose to handle the resulting questions about extinct forms cleanly, and it is now standard in the literature even where traditional names survive in general use.
The practical disputes
Applying the framework generates real arguments rather than settling everything. Placing a fossil on the stem requires knowing its relationships, which is inferred from character analysis and can change when new material or new methods arrive, so a species may move between stem and crown across successive studies. Fragmentary material supports weak placements. Convergent features mislead analyses, since unrelated animals acquiring similar traits can be grouped wrongly. Molecular data is unavailable for most fossils, so the two main sources of evidence apply to different sets of organisms and combining them requires assumptions. And there is a genuine philosophical question about whether crown groups are the right things to name, since they are defined by an accident of which lineages happen to survive, so a mass extinction changes where the crown boundary falls without anything having happened to the animals. That last point is raised regularly and has no tidy answer.
