How Do You Weigh Something in a Container? Subtract the Container

The weight of the empty container is recorded separately so that the contents can be charged for and the vehicle can be checked against a legal limit. Getting it wrong is expensive.

The three quantities

Any weighing of goods in a container involves three related numbers that must be kept distinct. The gross is the total weight of everything on the scale. The tare is the weight of the packaging, pallet, container or vehicle on its own. The net is the gross minus the tare, and it is the quantity that is bought, sold and taxed. Confusing them is the source of a great many commercial disputes, and the convention that the container's own weight is marked on it, rather than being assumed, exists precisely because a wrong assumption propagates into every transaction using that container.

Where the figure is used

The number appears throughout trade and transport:

  • Stamped on shipping containers, on the door of every one
  • Marked on road vehicles, so a load can be checked against the limit
  • Set automatically on a kitchen or laboratory scale by a tare button
  • Printed on packaged goods where the declared weight is the contents
  • Used to charge freight, which is levied on the contents
  • Used in customs assessment, where duty is on the goods

Why shipping had to change the rules

Declaring the weight of a loaded container accurately turned out to be a safety problem rather than a commercial one. Under-declared containers were routinely loaded onto ships, which meant the vessel's actual weight distribution differed from the plan, affecting stability and the loading on the structure, and under-declaration was implicated in several ship losses and in a number of collapses of container stacks. International rules in force from 2016 therefore require the shipper to provide a verified gross mass before a container may be loaded, obtained either by weighing the packed container or by weighing the contents and adding the marked tare, and a container without one is not shipped.

Why containers are marked rather than weighed

Marking the empty weight permanently on a container rather than weighing it each time saves an enormous amount of work and introduces a specific risk. A shipping container is weighed once when built and the figure is painted on the door, and every subsequent calculation uses that number for the rest of the container's working life, which may be twenty years. Over that time the container accumulates repairs, replacement panels, additional flooring and paint, all of which add weight that the marked figure does not reflect, and a repaired container can be several hundred kilograms heavier than its door claims. Reweighing after major repair is required and is not always done.

How a scale does it automatically

Modern scales handle the subtraction internally, which is convenient and conceals a limit worth knowing. Pressing the tare control with a container on the platform stores the current reading and displays zero, so everything added afterwards is displayed as net. What it does not do is increase the scale's capacity, since the mechanism is still carrying the full gross weight, so a heavy container on a scale near its limit leaves very little range for contents. Precision is also unaffected, since the instrument's accuracy depends on the total load rather than on the displayed figure, which matters in laboratory weighing where a heavy vessel degrades the result.
