What Is a Weed? A Category That Describes People, Not Plants

No botanical characteristic makes a plant a weed. The same species is a weed in one field, a crop in the next and a protected rarity in a nature reserve, because the word describes a relationship between a plant and somebody's intentions rather than anything about the plant itself. That makes it an unusually clear case of a value judgement dressed as a description.
The definitions people actually use
Several definitions circulate and they disagree with each other in revealing ways:

Why the same plants keep appearing
The ecological definition is the one with real content. Plants that thrive on disturbed ground share a recognisable set of traits, and those traits are what make them troublesome. They germinate fast and grow fast, they produce very large numbers of small seeds, they reproduce early in life, they are frequently self-compatible so a single individual can found a population, they disperse widely, they tolerate a wide range of conditions, many spread vegetatively from fragments so that cutting or digging multiplies them, and their seeds persist in soil for years. That combination is an evolutionary strategy adapted to environments that are repeatedly cleared, which describes floodplains, landslides and animal-disturbed ground in nature and describes farmland, gardens, roadsides and building sites in a human landscape. Agriculture creates disturbed ground continuously and on an enormous scale, so it manufactures ideal habitat for exactly these species, which is why weeding is permanent rather than a task that can be finished.
The judgement changes with the observer
The instability of the category is easy to demonstrate. Corn poppies, cornflowers and corncockle were serious arable weeds that became conservation priorities once herbicides nearly eliminated them, and money is now spent encouraging plants that money was once spent destroying. Oilseed rape growing in a wheat field is a weed and in the next field is the crop. Bracken is a protected component of some habitats and a target of expensive control in others. Many garden ornamentals are invasive weeds elsewhere, and several plants sold in one country are illegal to possess in another. Dandelion is variously a lawn problem, a salad vegetable, a medicinal plant and an important early nectar source depending on who is looking. The practical consequence is that weed management requires stating an objective first, because without one there is no way to decide which plants are the problem, and a great deal of confused argument about wildflowers and lawns comes from participants holding different unstated objectives.
What control has become
Chemical control transformed agriculture and is running into its own limits. Herbicide resistance has evolved repeatedly, with hundreds of documented resistant weed populations worldwide and several species resistant to multiple modes of action, which is the same evolutionary process as antibiotic resistance driven by the same intensity of selection. Herbicide-tolerant crops made control simpler and intensified selection further by concentrating use on single compounds. Few genuinely new herbicide modes of action have reached the market in decades, so the response has shifted towards integrated weed management, which combines rotation, cover cropping, competitive crop varieties, delayed sowing, mechanical methods and targeted application to reduce reliance on any single tool. Precision technology has begun to matter, with cameras identifying individual plants and applying herbicide only to them, and with mechanical and laser systems that remove weeds without chemicals. In gardens the argument has moved in another direction entirely, with growing acceptance of lawns containing other species, which is a change in objective rather than in technique.
