What Is a Wind-Assisted Record? A Performance That Does Not Count

A sprinter or jumper can produce the best performance of their life and have it struck from the records because the air was moving slightly too fast behind them. The limit is two metres per second, the measurement is made for a defined window, and the rule exists because the advantage is real and measurable.
Where the limit came from
Tailwind reduces air resistance, which is a substantial component of the effort in short sprints, and increases the effective jump distance in horizontal jumps. Wind tunnel work and analysis of race data indicate that a tailwind of two metres per second is worth roughly a tenth of a second over one hundred metres compared with still air, which is far larger than the margins separating medallists, so an unlimited allowance would make records meaningless. The limit was set at two metres per second, which is a brisk breeze and roughly the point at which a flag begins to extend, and the number is a compromise rather than a physical threshold, chosen to permit competition in ordinary conditions while excluding a decisive advantage. Events affected are the one hundred metres, the one hundred and one hundred and ten metres hurdles, the two hundred metres, the long jump and the triple jump. Anything longer is exempt, on the reasoning that a runner going around a bend experiences headwind and tailwind in turn, which cancels.
How it is measured
The procedure is specified in detail because the number decides whether a performance exists:
- •A gauge is positioned beside the straight, fifty metres from the finish, one and a half metres from the track and one and a quarter metres above it
- •For the one hundred metres the measurement runs for ten seconds from the starting signal, and for the hurdles slightly longer
- •For the two hundred metres it runs for ten seconds from the moment the leader enters the straight, so the bend is not measured at all
- •For the jumps it runs for five seconds from a marker on the runway, so it samples the approach rather than the whole event
- •Ultrasonic gauges have largely replaced propeller types and are calibrated before competition
- •The reading is averaged over the window, so a gust within a legal average is not excluded, which is one of the rule's acknowledged limitations
The gaps in the rule
The system is a practical approximation and its weaknesses are well understood. A single gauge measures the air at one point beside the track and cannot know what the athlete in lane eight experienced, and stadium architecture produces swirling and channelling that make conditions genuinely different across the width of the track. Averaging over a window conceals variation within it. Combined events use a more lenient rule, permitting an average across the relevant disciplines, which produces occasional anomalies. Altitude is not regulated at all, and thinner air at height produces an advantage comparable to a strong tailwind for sprints and jumps, which is why performances at high-altitude venues are legal and are treated informally with caution, and why a famous long jump set at altitude in 1968 stood for decades. Indoor performances have no wind rule and are recorded separately. Nothing in the framework adjusts for temperature or humidity, which also affect air density measurably.
What happens to the performance
A wind-assisted mark still counts for the competition, so the athlete wins the race and keeps the medal, and it is simply ineligible for record purposes and is annotated in results with the measured wind. That creates situations that are awkward to explain, with athletes holding the fastest time ever run over a distance that does not appear in the record books, and with qualifying standards for major championships generally requiring a legal wind, which means a performance can win a national title and fail to qualify its winner for anything. Some statistical compilations maintain separate all-conditions lists alongside official ones. The rule also shapes behaviour, since athletes and coaches watch forecasts when selecting meetings, and venues known for favourable prevailing conditions attract record attempts. None of this is cheating and all of it is optimisation within the rules, which is the same pattern visible wherever a measurable threshold decides whether an achievement is recognised.
The takeaway
A tailwind of two metres per second is worth about a tenth of a second over one hundred metres, far more than the margins that decide medals, so anything above it voids the mark for record purposes while the athlete still wins. A gauge beside the straight averages over a defined window, which misses gusts and cannot know conditions in the outside lane. Altitude produces a comparable advantage and is not regulated at all.
