The original observation
The story told about the study's origin is that Bluma Zeigarnik, working in Kurt Lewin's group in Berlin, noticed that waiters in a cafe could recall unpaid orders in detail and forgot them immediately once the bill was settled. A separate but connected line of research concerns what happens after an interruption, and it is better supported than the memory claim. Studies of attention find that an interrupted task continues to occupy cognitive resources afterwards, degrading performance on whatever is done next, an effect described as attention residue. Switching between tasks repeatedly therefore costs more than the time the switches take, because each departure leaves something running.
