What Is Felt? Cloth Made Without Spinning or Weaving Anything

Every other cloth requires spinning fibre into yarn and then weaving or knitting it. Felt requires neither. Wool fibres are covered in microscopic overlapping scales, and agitating them wet and warm makes those scales ratchet past each other and lock, turning a loose mass into a solid sheet that cannot be pulled apart.

The mechanism

A wool fibre's surface is made of cuticle cells arranged like roof tiles, all pointing towards the tip. When fibres are moved against each other, each one can slide easily in the direction its scales point and catches when it tries to move the other way, so repeated agitation drives every fibre steadily in one direction and it cannot come back. Multiply that across millions of tangled fibres and the mass contracts, densifies and becomes mechanically interlocked into a coherent sheet. Heat, moisture and alkalinity all make the scales lift and increase the effect, which is precisely why a wool jumper that goes through a hot wash comes out small, thick and rigid, and why felting and laundry accidents are the same process. Wool felts best, other animal fibres including rabbit and beaver felt well and are traditional for hats, and plant fibres and most synthetics do not felt at all because they have no scales. Removing the scales chemically is how machine-washable wool is produced.

How it is made

Two traditional routes exist, and a modern industrial one:

  • Wet felting, in which carded wool is laid out in thin layers at right angles to each other, wetted with hot soapy water, then rolled, rubbed and pressed until it binds
  • Fulling, the further stage of hard work and heat that shrinks and densifies the sheet substantially, also applied to woven woollen cloth to give it a dense weatherproof surface
  • Needle felting, in which barbed needles are punched repeatedly through loose fibre, dragging fibres through the mass to tangle them mechanically, which needs no water
  • Industrial needle-punching, the same principle done by machine with thousands of needles, which is how most modern felt and many nonwoven fabrics are made
  • Hat making, which uses fur fibres and a carroting process with mercury salts historically, an occupational poisoning that gave rise to a well-known phrase about hatters
  • Nuno felting, a modern technique felting wool through an open woven fabric so the two become one cloth

The material of the steppe

Felt is inseparable from the nomadic pastoral cultures of Central Asia, where it solved an unusually large number of problems from a single available resource. The yurt or ger is covered in large felt panels over a collapsible wooden frame, and felt is nearly ideal for that use: it insulates extremely well because the tangled fibre traps air, it sheds rain because the fibre surface resists wetting while the structure breathes, it is windproof, it is repairable by felting a patch directly into the damaged area, it can be made in any size without a loom, and it packs and travels. Beyond the dwelling it provided floor rugs, saddle pads, boots, coats, bags and ceremonial objects, and the patterns worked into it carry regional and family meaning. Making it remains a communal event in several countries, with large panels rolled by horse or by groups of people, and the tradition has recognised cultural heritage status in Kyrgyzstan and neighbouring countries. Archaeological felt from frozen tombs in the Altai, preserved in ice for over two thousand years, is among the oldest surviving textile anywhere.

Where it is used now

Industrially the material is valued for properties unrelated to its appearance. Dense wool felt damps vibration and absorbs sound, so it is used in pianos, where the hammer coverings and dampers are precisely graded felts whose condition determines the instrument's tone, and it is used in machinery for seals, wipers, polishing wheels and oil-retaining bearings because it holds lubricant and conforms to a surface. It filters, insulates and pads. Synthetic needle-punched nonwovens made the same way serve as geotextiles under roads, as filtration media and as carpet backing, and the nonwoven sector as a whole, which includes wet wipes and medical fabrics, now exceeds many woven categories by volume. Craft use has grown substantially, since the material requires no loom, no spinning and almost no equipment, which makes it one of the few textile processes a beginner can complete from raw fleece to finished object in an afternoon.

The takeaway

Wool fibres carry overlapping scales that let them slide one way and catch the other, so agitating them wet and warm ratchets them permanently into a locked mass with no spinning or weaving involved. That is also why a hot wash shrinks a jumper. It insulates, sheds rain and repairs by patching, which made it the covering of the Central Asian yurt. Piano hammers, seals and geotextiles use the same material industrially.
