What Is Rewilding? Restoring Processes Rather Than Scenery

Traditional conservation protects a species or maintains a habitat in a chosen condition, which requires continuous management and produces a landscape held at a fixed point. Rewilding aims instead to restore the processes that shape a landscape, including grazing, predation, flooding and decay, and then to step back and accept whatever results, which is a genuinely different objective.
What it tries to restore
The processes rewilding projects attempt to bring back are the ones that large animals and unmanaged water perform:
- •Grazing and browsing by large herbivores, which creates a mosaic of open ground, scrub and wood rather than uniform closed forest, and which is argued to be the natural condition of much of temperate Europe
- •Predation, which changes not only prey numbers but prey behaviour, keeping herbivores moving and preventing sustained pressure on any one place
- •Natural water dynamics, including rivers allowed to meander, flood and deposit sediment rather than being straightened and embanked
- •Disturbance, including trampling, wallowing, digging and treefall, which creates the bare ground and dead wood that many species depend on
- •Decomposition, since carcasses left in place support an entire community of scavengers, insects and fungi that is largely absent from managed land
- •Connectivity, joining fragments so that populations and processes can move, which is frequently the constraint that matters most
The trophic cascade argument
The idea that a top predator restructures an entire ecosystem is central to the case for rewilding, and the most cited example is the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone from 1995. The popular account holds that wolves reduced and moved elk, allowing willow and aspen to recover along rivers, which brought back beavers and songbirds and stabilised riverbanks, changing the course of rivers. The underlying effect is real and the story has been substantially qualified by subsequent research: elk numbers were falling for several reasons including hunting and drought, vegetation recovery has been patchy rather than general, and the influence of bears, weather and human management is hard to separate from the wolves. Ecologists who work on the system generally regard the popular version as overstated while accepting that predators do exert measurable effects on vegetation through both numbers and behaviour. The episode is a useful caution, since rewilding's public support rests heavily on a narrative that the science supports more cautiously than the advocacy does.
The practical versions
Projects in practice range widely. European schemes have reintroduced beavers, whose dams restore wetland and reduce downstream flood peaks, with measurable effects documented at several sites, and lynx, wolf and bison reintroductions are at various stages. Where an extinct species cannot be restored, an ecological proxy may be used, so free-roaming cattle and ponies stand in for extinct aurochs and tarpan, which is what the Oostvaardersplassen reserve in the Netherlands and the Knepp estate in England have done, the latter converting unprofitable arable farmland into a mosaic that has produced notable recoveries of turtle doves, nightingales and purple emperor butterflies. Marine rewilding includes restoring oyster reefs and seagrass and removing fishing pressure. At the speculative end sit proposals for de-extinction and for Pleistocene rewilding, introducing large mammals to landscapes they have not occupied for millennia, which few ecologists regard as near-term practical.
The objections that deserve answering
Rewilding attracts serious criticism from within conservation as well as from farming. Land is the central conflict, since rewilding uses areas that currently produce food or support livelihoods, and projects imposed on rural communities without their agreement have generated lasting hostility, which is a political failure rather than an ecological one. Reintroduced predators kill livestock, and compensation schemes work only when they are prompt and adequately funded. Animal welfare questions arose sharply at Oostvaardersplassen, where large numbers of free-roaming animals starved in a severe winter in an enclosed reserve with no migration route and no predators, prompting a policy change and a genuine ethical argument about what non-intervention means in a fenced area. There is also a baseline problem: rewilding implies a reference state, and there is no obvious date to choose, since every landscape has been shaped by people for thousands of years and the pre-human condition is neither knowable in detail nor achievable now.
