What Is Retrieval Practice? Pulling Information Out Beats Putting It In Again

Trying to recall something strengthens the memory more than reading it again does, and the difference is large. The finding is one of the best replicated in the study of learning and it contradicts what most people do when they revise.
The finding
The basic experiment compares two groups given the same material for the same total time, with one group rereading it and the other attempting to recall it, and then tests both after a delay. The recall group performs substantially better, and the gap widens as the delay lengthens, which matters because real learning is assessed after days or weeks rather than minutes. The effect holds across a wide range of materials, from word lists through prose passages to complex technical content, across ages from children to older adults, and in classroom settings as well as laboratories. It does not depend on the attempt being successful, since even failed retrieval followed by feedback improves later memory relative to restudying, which is counterintuitive and well supported. The size of the advantage varies with conditions and the direction of the effect is remarkably consistent, which is why it is treated as established rather than promising.
Why it works
Several explanations have been proposed and they are not exclusive:

Why nobody does it
The practical problem is that the better method feels worse, which is the most important thing to understand about the finding. Rereading produces a strong sense of fluency, since the text is familiar and processing it is easy, and people reliably interpret that ease as evidence of learning. Retrieval is effortful, frequently fails, and produces a sense of struggle, which people interpret as evidence that it is not working. Studies asking learners to predict their own later performance find that they consistently favour rereading and consistently mispredict the outcome, and that the mistaken judgement persists even after experiencing the difference directly. That places the finding among a group of desirable difficulties, conditions that slow learning during practice and improve it afterwards, and it means that changing behaviour requires trusting the evidence over the immediate experience, which is an unusual demand.
What the effect does not fix
The advantage is real and bounded, and overselling it has become a problem in its own right. Retrieval strengthens what has been retrieved and does nothing for material never encoded in the first place, so it supplements initial study rather than replacing it, and a learner who tests themselves on material they have not yet understood is practising failure without the feedback that makes failure useful. Transfer to different questions is weaker than transfer to the same questions, which means practising recall of specific facts does not automatically produce flexible understanding. Complex material benefits, and the advantage is generally smaller than for simple factual content. Anxiety interacts with it, since testing under pressure can impair performance for some learners, which is an argument for low-stakes practice rather than against the method. And the effect says nothing about what is worth learning, which remains a separate question entirely.
Using it
The applications are straightforward and mostly involve replacing passive review with attempts to produce. Closing the book and writing out what is remembered before checking is the simplest version and needs no materials. Making questions from the material and answering them later works well and has the added benefit that constructing good questions requires understanding. Flashcards apply the principle by construction, provided they are used by attempting the answer rather than flipping straight to it. Practice tests, whether formal or self-made, are the classroom version, and a growing body of work supports low-stakes frequent testing for learning rather than for assessment. Spacing the attempts out multiplies the benefit, since the two effects combine. The common failures are looking at the answer too quickly, which removes the retrieval, and testing recognition rather than recall, since choosing from options is far easier and produces much less benefit.
