Who Invented the Wheel? Pottery, Carts and Why the Americas Did Without

Humans had been farming for five thousand years, building towns, weaving cloth, smelting copper and sailing the Mediterranean before anyone put a wheel on a cart, and the wheel is not an obvious idea. Nothing in nature rolls on an axle; a log rolls, but a log is not a wheel, and the leap from rolling a load on logs to mounting it on discs that turn on a fixed shaft is the difficult and unrepeated part. The earliest evidence comes from a band across Europe and the Near East within a few centuries of 3500 BC, and the peoples of the Americas, who had wheels on their toys, never put one under a load.
The potter's wheel first
The first wheels did not carry anything. The potter's wheel, a heavy disc spun on a pivot so that a lump of clay could be drawn up into a pot, is attested in Mesopotamia by about 3800 BC and may be older, and it is a wheel in the full sense, a disc rotating about a fixed axis. Whether the cart wheel descended from it or was thought of separately is unknown, but the idea of a rotating disc was in the world for some centuries before the cart. Rollers under sledges, logs placed and re-placed ahead of a load, were used to move the stones of monuments and are probably older still, and the step from roller to wheel is the step of fixing the log's ends so that they turn in bearings.
The oldest wheels
The evidence for the wheeled vehicle clusters remarkably tightly:
- •A pictograph of a sledge on wheels on a clay tablet from Uruk in Mesopotamia, about 3500 BC
- •The Bronocice pot from Poland, about 3500 BC, decorated with what appears to be a four-wheeled wagon with a yoke
- •The Ljubljana Marshes wheel from Slovenia, a wooden wheel of about 3150 BC with its axle, the oldest actual wheel found
- •Miniature clay wagons from the Hungarian plain, and wagon graves of the steppe cultures north of the Black Sea, of the same centuries
- •Rutted tracks and burials with wheels across the Caucasus and the Near East by 3000 BC
One invention or several
The tightness of the dates has been read both ways. The older view was a single invention in Mesopotamia spreading outward; the current one, given how quickly the wheel appears from Poland to Iraq and how differently it is built in different places, is that the idea travelled fast along the trade and migration routes of the fourth millennium and was reinvented or adapted as it went, with the steppe peoples, who had just domesticated the horse, as its most enthusiastic users. The first wheels were solid discs, cut from planks and joined, heavy and slow, and the first vehicles were ox-drawn wagons for hauling grain, manure and stone. The spoked wheel, light enough for a fast vehicle, came around 2000 BC, and the war chariot it made possible was the decisive weapon of the second millennium BC from Egypt to China.
Why the axle was the hard part
A wheel needs a hole through its centre, an axle that fits the hole closely enough to hold it and loosely enough to let it turn, and ends that are round and smooth, and all of that has to be made in wood with copper or stone tools and hold up under a tonne of grain on a rutted track. It also needs a vehicle to attach to, an animal to pull it, a harness that does not choke the animal and a landscape flat enough to use it on. The wheel arrived when those things had arrived, in societies with metal tools, draught oxen and grain to move, which is why it came five thousand years into farming and not at the start. Early wheels were fixed to a rotating axle, as on a child's toy, and the separate wheel turning on a fixed axle, which allows cornering, came later.
The civilisations without it
The Inca built 40,000 kilometres of road and the Maya and Aztecs built cities of hundreds of thousands, and none of them used a wheeled vehicle. They knew the principle: Mexican pottery animals from about 100 AD onward have axles and wheels and roll. What they lacked was the rest of the package. There were no draught animals in the Americas after the horses and camels died out at the end of the ice age, the llama being too small to pull a cart, and the terrain of Mesoamerica and the Andes was mountain, jungle and swamp, where a porter with a tumpline beats a cart. The wheel is a solution to a particular problem, moving heavy loads over level ground with a strong animal, and where that problem did not exist the wheel was a toy. The same is true of parts of the Old World: the Sahara and Arabia gave up the wheel for the camel in the early centuries AD and did not take it back until the lorry.
The takeaway
The wheel appeared for carts around 3500 BC across a band from Poland to Mesopotamia, after the potter's wheel and probably spreading and being adapted along trade routes rather than invented once, and the difficult part was not the disc but the axle, bearing and harness that let a load turn on it. It came late because it needed metal tools, oxen, grain and level ground, and the Americas, which had wheeled toys but no draught animals and no flat roads, had no use for it.
